HFS Plus or HFS+ (also known as Mac OS Extended or HFS Extended) is a journaling file system developed by Apple Inc. It replaced the Hierarchical File System (HFS) as the primary file system of Apple computers with the 1998 release of Mac OS 8.1. HFS+ continued as the primary Mac OS X file system until it was itself replaced with the Apple File System (APFS), released with macOS High Sierra in 2017. HFS+ is also one of the formats used by the iPod digital music player.

Compared to its predecessor HFS, also called Mac OS Standard or HFS Standard, HFS Plus supports much larger files (block addresses are 32-bit length instead of 16-bit) and using Unicode (instead of Mac OS Roman or any of several other character sets) for naming items. Like HFS, HFS Plus uses B-trees to store most volume metadata, but unlike most other file systems, HFS Plus supports hard links to directories. HFS Plus permits filenames up to 255 characters in length, and n-forked files similar to NTFS, though until 2005 almost no system software took advantage of forks other than the data fork and resource fork. HFS Plus also uses a full 32-bit allocation mapping table rather than HFS's 16 bits, improving the use of space on large disks.

Codenamed Sequoia in development,[4] HFS+ was introduced with the January 19, 1998, release of Mac OS 8.1.[2]

With the release of the Mac OS X 10.2.2 update on November 11, 2002, Apple added optional journaling features to HFS Plus for improved data reliability. These features were accessible through the GUI, using the Disk Utility application in Mac OS X Server, but only accessible through the command line in the standard desktop client.[5]

With Mac OS X v10.3, all HFS Plus volumes on all Macs were set to be journaled by default. Within the system, an HFS Plus volume with a journal is identified as HFSJ.

Mac OS X 10.3 also introduced another version of HFS Plus called HFSX. HFSX volumes are almost identical to HFS Plus volumes, except that they are never surrounded by the HFS Wrapper that is typical of HFS Plus volumes and they optionally support case sensitivity for file and folder names. With Mac OS X 10.4, Apple added support for Inline Attribute Data records, something that had been a part of the Mac OS X implementation of HFS Plus since at least 10.0, but always marked as "reserved for future use".[8] Until the release of Mac OS X Server 10.4, HFS Plus supported only the standard UNIX file system permissions; however, 10.4 introduced support for access control list–based file security, which provides a richer mechanism to define file permissions and is also designed to be fully compatible with the file permission models on other platforms such as MicrosoftWindows XP and Windows Server 2003.[9]

In Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6, HFS+ compression was added using Deflate (Zlib). In open source and some other areas this is referred to as AppleFSCompression or decmpfs. Compressed data may be stored in either an extended attribute or the resource fork. When using non-Apple APIs, AppleFSCompression is not always completely transparent.[10] OS X 10.9 introduced two new algorithms: LZVN (libFastCompression), and LZFSE.

In Mac OS X Lion 10.7, logical volume encryption (known as FileVault 2) was added to the operating system. This addition to the operating system in no way changed the logical structure of the file system. Apple's logical volume manager is known as Core Storage and its encryption at the volume level can apply to file systems other than HFS Plus. With appropriate hardware, both encryption and decryption should be transparent.

Design[edit]

HFS Plus volumes are divided into sectors (called logical blocks in HFS), that are usually 512 bytes in size. These sectors are then grouped together into allocation blocks which can contain one or more sectors; the number of allocation blocks depends on the total size of the volume. HFS Plus uses a larger value to address allocation blocks than HFS, 32 bits rather than 16 bits; this means it can access 4,294,967,296 (= 232) allocation blocks rather than the 65,536 (= 216) allocation blocks available to HFS.[2] When disks were small, this was of little consequence, but as larger-capacity drives became available, it meant that the smallest amount of space that any file could occupy (a single allocation block) became excessively large, wasting significant amounts of space. For example, on a 1 GB disk, the allocation block size under HFS is 16 KB, so even a 1-byte file would take up 16 KB of disk space. HFS Plus's system greatly improves space utilization on larger disks as a result.

File and folder names in HFS Plus are also encoded in UTF-16[11] and normalized to a form very nearly the same as Unicode Normalization Form D (NFD)[12] (which means that precomposed characters like "å" are decomposed in the HFS+ filename and therefore count as two code units[13] and UTF-16 implies that characters from outside the Basic Multilingual Plane also count as two code units in an HFS+ filename). HFS Plus permits filenames up to 255 UTF-16 code units in length.

Formerly, HFS Plus volumes were embedded inside an HFS standard file system. This was phased out by the Tiger transition to Intel Macs, where the HFS Plus file system was not embedded inside a wrapper. The wrapper had been designed for two purposes; it allowed Macintosh computers without HFS Plus support in their ROM to boot HFS Plus volumes and it also was designed to help users transition to HFS Plus by including a minimal HFS volume with a read-only file called Where_have_all_my_files_gone?, explaining to users with versions of Mac OS 8.0 and earlier without HFS Plus, that the volume requires a system with HFS Plus support. The original HFS volume contains a signature and an offset to the embedded HFS Plus volume within its volume header. All allocation blocks in the HFS volume which contain the embedded volume are mapped out of the HFS allocation file as bad blocks.[2]

Notable among file systems used for Unix systems, HFS Plus does not support sparse files.

There are nine structures that make up a typical HFS Plus volume:[2]

  1. Sectors 0 and 1 of the volume are HFS boot blocks. These are identical to the boot blocks in an HFS volume. They are part of the HFS wrapper.[14]
  2. Sector 2 contains the Volume Header, which is equivalent to the Master Directory Block in an HFS volume. The Volume Header stores a wide variety of data about the volume itself, for example the size of allocation blocks, a timestamp that indicates when the volume was created or the location of other volume structures such as the Catalog File or Extent Overflow File. The Volume Header is always located in the same place.
  3. The Allocation File which keeps track of which allocation blocks are free and which are in use. It is similar to the Volume Bitmap in HFS, in which each allocation block is represented by one bit. A zero means the block is free and a one means the block is in use. The main difference with the HFS Volume Bitmap, is that the Allocation File is stored as a regular file – it does not occupy a special reserved space near the beginning of the volume. The Allocation File can also change size and does not have to be stored contiguously within a volume.
  4. The Catalog File is a B-tree that contains records for all the files and directories stored in the volume. The HFS Plus Catalog File is very similar to the HFS Catalog File, the main differences being records are larger to allow more fields and to allow for those fields to be larger (for example to allow the longer 255-character unicode file names in HFS Plus). A record in the HFS Catalog File is 512 bytes in size; a record in the HFS Plus Catalog File is 4 KB in the classic Mac OS and 8 KB in macOS. Fields in HFS are of fixed size, while in HFS Plus the size can vary depending on the actual size of the data they store.
  5. The Extents Overflow File is another B-tree that records the allocation blocks that are allocated to each file as extents. Each file record in the Catalog File is capable of recording eight extents for each fork of a file; once those are used additional extents are recorded in the Extents Overflow File. Bad blocks are also recorded as extents in the Extents Overflow File. The default size of an extent record in the classic Mac OS is 1 KB and 4 KB in macOS.
  6. The Attributes File is a new B-tree in HFS Plus that does not have a corresponding structure in HFS. The Attributes File can store three different types of 4 KB records: Inline Data Attribute records, Fork Data Attribute records and Extension Attribute records. Inline Data Attribute records store small attributes that can fit within the record itself. Fork Data Attribute records contain references to a maximum of eight extents that can hold larger attributes. Extension Attributes are used to extend a Fork Data Attribute record when its eight extent records are already used.
  7. The Startup File is designed for non-Mac OS systems that lack HFS or HFS Plus support. It is similar to the Boot Blocks of an HFS volume.
  8. The second-to-last sector contains the Alternate Volume Header, which is equivalent to the Alternate Master Directory Block of HFS. Note that this is the second-to-last-sector for the disk, not the volume; if the disk is larger than the volume, the AVH will be outside the range of the filesystem.
  9. The last sector in the volume is reserved for use by Apple. It is used during the computer manufacturing process.[2]

Linux[edit]

The Linux kernel includes the hfsplus module[18] for mounting HFS+ filesystems read-write. HFS+ fsck and mkfs have been ported to Linux and are part of the hfsprogs package.[19]

In 2009, these drivers were diagnosed to be corrupting HFS+ drives with a capacity greater than 2 TB.[20] Consequently, Linux distributions such as Debian and Ubuntu stopped allowing mounting of HFS+ drives or partitions greater than 2 TB.[21] As of February 2011[update], work is in progress to lift this restriction.[22][needs update]

Under Linux's current HFS+ driver, journaling must be disabled in order to write data safely onto an HFS+ partition. Provided the partition isn't being used by Apple's Time Machine software, journaling can be disabled under macOS:[23] Using Disk Utility in OS X Yosemite, the user may hold Alt/Option and click "Disable Journaling" on the File menu, having first selected a mounted partition.

An HFS+ partition with journaling enabled may be forcibly mounted with write access under Linux, but this is unsupported and unwise.[23][24]

A Google Summer of Code project to implement write support to journaled HFS+[25] was accepted by the Linux Foundation in 2011 but was not completed at that time and is still a work in progress. Progress and improvements to the HFS+ driver, including some updates to journaling support, are posted on the linux-fsdevel mailing list[26] from time to time.

As of July 2011[update], Paragon Software Group provided kernel drivers that allow full read-write access to HFS+ journaled volumes.[27] The product is a proprietary implementation of HFS+ based on Paragon's proprietary UFSD library. There are both free and paid editions of the driver, and they include a utility for checking and repairing HFS+ volumes. According to the online documentation (free version[28] or the paid edition[29]), both the free edition and the paid edition currently support Linux kernels from 2.6.36 up to 4.12.x. Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, OpenSUSE and CentOS are the only Linux distributions officially supported.[30]

As of May 2012, Apple has only released read-only HFS+ drivers for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 as part of the Boot Camp software in Mac OS X 10.6.[31] This means users on these systems can read data on the HFS+ drive, but not write to them. Microsoft has created an HFS+ driver for the Xbox 360 mainly for the purpose of reading HFS+-formatted iPods.[citation needed]

Mac disk not ‘seen’ by Windows (no drive letter)

STEP 1: General MacDrive checks

If you have just installed MacDrive for the first time, please make sure that you have restarted the computer.  If you ignore the restart prompt after installing, Mac disks will not be available until the next reboot.  This is because our drivers will need to load at the next time Windows boots.

Please make sure you are using the latest version of MacDrive before proceeding. In many cases, updating to the latest version will take care of the issue you are experiencing.

STEP 2: Check that your drive setup is supported

Disks with multiple partition types:  MacDrive will only work with disks containing exclusively Mac-partitions.  It will not work with disks containing multiple partition types (e.g. a FAT32 and an HFS+ partition), with the exception of disks created with Boot Camp.

Encryption and Fusion: MacDrive also does not support encrypted disks (e.g. using FileVault), or Fusion drives.  Both of these drive types require additional software to be used, and for that reason, require the Mac OS.

STEP 3: Check that Windows recognizes the device correctly

A common cause is failed connectivity on your Windows system.

Please confirm that the drive is visible in the Windows “Disk Management” console. To access the Windows Disk Management console, please do the following:

Right-click on Computer (or This PC, My Computer, depending on Windows version)
Click Manage
Select Disk Management
Use the console on the right portion of the Window to check for the presence of the drive

If your drive is present in “Disk Management” make note of the drive number and proceed to Step 3.

If the drive is not present, please contact the drive vendor for assistance getting your drive recognized as a hardware device on your computer. Another possible cause is file system corruption. To repair such corruption, please try the following solutions:

– If you have MacDrive 9, you can attempt to repair the drive by going to Start > All Programs > MacDrive 9 > Tools > Repair Mac Disks (or in Windows 8, search the Apps menu for “Repair Mac Disks”), then follow the on-screen instructions to check the disk.

Note: In versions older than MacDrive 9, it is not possible to check a Mac disk unless it is mounted (assigned a drive letter).  MacDrive 9 includes a new repair tool which will check for unmounted Mac disks.

If the affected Mac disk does not appear in the list of disks to check, or if you are using MacDrive 8 or prior, we recommend taking the disk to a Mac to check the disk for problems (e.g. Disk Utility included with the Mac OS).

– If the disk is damaged but the corruption is not repairable by the aforementioned utilities consider “Disk Warrior” or “TechTool Pro”. Both are quality, 3rd-party disk repair utilities that may be able to recover the damage file system and the data within.

GPT and MacDrive

GPT (GUID Partition Table) is a partition type for disks.  When formatting Mac-formatted disks, such as HFS+ or HFS+J, in Disk Utility, current versions of the Mac OS typically use GPT as the default partition type.

Fixed disks

MacDrive fully supports GPT partitioning for fixed disks.  Fixed disks can include internal hard drives, but can also include portable devices such as external hard drives which connect via USB, FireWire, etc.

No additional software is needed to access a Mac-formatted disk that is GPT partitioned.  You can simply connect the disk to your computer, and MacDrive will be able to access the disk and assign it a drive letter.

Removable devices

Removable devices, such as flash drives, cannot be GPT partitioned and work with MacDrive.  This is because Windows does not currently support GPT removable devices of any kind, including those formatted NTFS, the most common Windows disk formatting type.   A removable device can be identified as it will appear in the “Devices with Removable Storage” area of when viewing available drives (‘Computer’ in Windows 7/Vista, ‘My Computer’ in XP).

MacDrive does, however, support Mac-formatted removables with the partition types of APM (Apple Partition Map) or MBR (Master Boot Record), either of which can be created with Disk Utility.

To create a removable drive that will work with MacDrive, you can use either Disk Utility or the MacDrive Disk Manager.  Please make sure to migrate any data from the device as repartitioning it will erase all data.

Disk Utility

Open Disk Utility by opening “Applications” from the Dock, and then “Utilities”.  Then, select Disk Utility.  Connect the removable device in the left panel.  Then, select “Partition”.

Select the drop-down under “Volume Scheme” to select the number of partitions you want (usually, one).  Then, select the “Options” button and select an alternate partition scheme, such as Apple Partition Map.  Then, press OK, then Apply.  You will be asked to confirm the change; press Partition to proceed.

MacDrive Disk Manager

Connect the device in question, then open “Computer” or “My Computer” to view connected devices.  Right-click on the removable device and select “Format Mac Disk”, then select “Modify Mac Volumes”.   Select the device, and press “Format Volume”, then Format.  The result will be a Mac-formatted removable device that can freely be used on Macs, or in Windows with MacDrive.

Devices with multiple partition types (i.e. dual-format)

Dual-formatted hard disks, or devices with multiple different partition types, are not supported.  For example, a device with one FAT32 partition and one HFS+ partition, or two HFS+ partitions and an NTFS partition, has multiple partition types.  Neither Windows nor MacDrive will be capable of working with a drive configured in this manner.

Devices used with MacDrive can have multiple Mac partitions (HFS+, HFS+J, HFSX, and so on).

This Knowledgebase article does not apply to Mac computers running Boot Camp. The partition configuration of the system hard disk on a Boot Camp system is fully supported.
With MacDrive installed you won’t need to use two different formats (e.g. FAT32 and HFS+) to use your drive on both computers. MacDrive enables your Windows PC to seamlessly work with HFS/HFS+ disks.

Troubleshooting installation failures

If a MacDrive installation fails, the following are some general tips for proceeding:

  • Ensure that you have downloaded the current version.  The trial download will always be the current version, but if you have a disc or are using an archived file, this is a frequent cause of issues.
  • Close all other open applications.
  • Restart Windows, then try the installation again without opening other applications.
  • Temporarily disable resident anti-malware software, such as antivirus and other security software.  You can disconnect your network connection during installation if you wish, as the installation process does not require Internet.  If installation completes, enable Internet before activating MacDrive.
  • If the installation appears to stall (the progress bar freezes), make sure there are no popups in the background asking for permissions.  Windows UAC, as well as other programs, may require you to respond before installation proceeds.

Please note that MacDrive 6 (and earlier) and MacDrive 6 CrossStripe Edition (and earlier), cannot be activated from trial versions.  You will need the original full installer for these programs.

How to deactivate

In some cases, you may wish to deactivate your MacDrive installation — to unlicense MacDrive and make the license available to be used again.  This is particularly useful if you wish to migrate your MacDrive installation to a different computer, or if you’re planning to make major changes (such as hardware changes) that may affect your license.  There are two methods that you can use to deactivate MacDrive 9.

Deactivating without uninstalling: In MacDrive 9, you can also deactivate without uninstalling by going to Start > All Programs > MacDrive > Deactivate MacDrive 9.  This requires an Internet connection.  MacDrive 9 Quick Start also enables you to select Deactivate MacDrive.

During uninstall: MacDrive 9, if activated through the Internet, automatically deactivates during normal uninstallation in the Control Panel.  No special steps are required.  If no Internet connection is available, the installation will proceed without deactivating MacDrive.

Regardless of which method you use, please be sure to take note of your serial number before uninstalling if you do not have it recorded in another location. Serial numbers can be accessed through Start > All Programs > MacDrive > Help and Support > MacDrive Support Information.  If you purchased MacDrive as a download from Mediafour.com, your serial number will also be on your Order Confirmation email.

Circumstances:
You are having a problem with the Software Activation process for a Mediafour software product.

Cause: 
There are four likely causes:

1) You aren’t connected to the Internet while activating, or

2) You are connected to the Internet through a proxy, which is common on business networks, or

3) You have already installed the software on the allowed number of computers (typically just one), or

4) You have replaced enough hardware in your computer that it appears to the activation system that you are now installing the software on a second computer, even though you are not.

Solution(s):

1) Confirm that you have an active Internet connection before attempting to activate the software.

2) Confirm that the activation wizard knows your Internet proxy information, which you can likely get from your system administrator if you are on a business network.

3) If you are using MacDrive 7.2.5 (or newer, including MacDrive 8 and 9) or XPlay 3.1.4 (or newer), and activated through the Internet, uninstalling will also allow you to deactivate automatically if your computer is still connected to the Internet. Please click here for more information.

4) If you are using MacDrive 8.0.6 (or newer, including MacDrive 9), you may deactivate without uninstalling by going to Start > All Programs > MacDrive 8 > Deactivate MacDrive.

5) Purchase additional software for the other computers from shop.mediafour.com.

Drives & Devices

Mac disk not ‘seen’ by Windows (no drive letter)

STEP 1: General MacDrive checks

If you have just installed MacDrive for the first time, please make sure that you have restarted the computer.  If you ignore the restart prompt after installing, Mac disks will not be available until the next reboot.  This is because our drivers will need to load at the next time Windows boots.

Please make sure you are using the latest version of MacDrive before proceeding. In many cases, updating to the latest version will take care of the issue you are experiencing.

STEP 2: Check that your drive setup is supported

Disks with multiple partition types:  MacDrive will only work with disks containing exclusively Mac-partitions.  It will not work with disks containing multiple partition types (e.g. a FAT32 and an HFS+ partition), with the exception of disks created with Boot Camp.

Encryption and Fusion: MacDrive also does not support encrypted disks (e.g. using FileVault), or Fusion drives.  Both of these drive types require additional software to be used, and for that reason, require the Mac OS.

STEP 3: Check that Windows recognizes the device correctly

A common cause is failed connectivity on your Windows system.

Please confirm that the drive is visible in the Windows “Disk Management” console. To access the Windows Disk Management console, please do the following:

Right-click on Computer (or This PC, My Computer, depending on Windows version)
Click Manage
Select Disk Management
Use the console on the right portion of the Window to check for the presence of the drive

If your drive is present in “Disk Management” make note of the drive number and proceed to Step 3.

If the drive is not present, please contact the drive vendor for assistance getting your drive recognized as a hardware device on your computer. Mediafour Technical Support is not able to troubleshoot hardware, driver, or connectivity problems, but some issues can be resolved by choosing a different port on your computer, using a different cable, checking for loose connections, connecting directly rather than through an intermediate device (such as a USB hub), or, if your drive allows it, trying a different connection type.

STEP 4: Drive needs repair

Another possible cause is file system corruption. To repair such corruption, please try the following solutions:

– If you have MacDrive 9, you can attempt to repair the drive by going to Start > All Programs > MacDrive 9 > Tools > Repair Mac Disks (or in Windows 8, search the Apps menu for “Repair Mac Disks”), then follow the on-screen instructions to check the disk.

Note: In versions older than MacDrive 9, it is not possible to check a Mac disk unless it is mounted (assigned a drive letter).  MacDrive 9 includes a new repair tool which will check for unmounted Mac disks.

If the affected Mac disk does not appear in the list of disks to check, or if you are using MacDrive 8 or prior, we recommend taking the disk to a Mac to check the disk for problems (e.g. Disk Utility included with the Mac OS).

– If the disk is damaged but the corruption is not repairable by the aforementioned utilities consider “Disk Warrior” or “TechTool Pro”. Both are quality, 3rd-party disk repair utilities that may be able to recover the damage file system and the data within.

STEP 5: Contact Support

Please create a technical support ticket with a detailed problem description and information on your computer’s configuration.

GPT and MacDrive

GPT (GUID Partition Table) is a partition type for disks.  When formatting Mac-formatted disks, such as HFS+ or HFS+J, in Disk Utility, current versions of the Mac OS typically use GPT as the default partition type.

Fixed disks

MacDrive fully supports GPT partitioning for fixed disks.  Fixed disks can include internal hard drives, but can also include portable devices such as external hard drives which connect via USB, FireWire, etc.

No additional software is needed to access a Mac-formatted disk that is GPT partitioned.  You can simply connect the disk to your computer, and MacDrive will be able to access the disk and assign it a drive letter.

Removable devices

Removable devices, such as flash drives, cannot be GPT partitioned and work with MacDrive.  This is because Windows does not currently support GPT removable devices of any kind, including those formatted NTFS, the most common Windows disk formatting type.   A removable device can be identified as it will appear in the “Devices with Removable Storage” area of when viewing available drives (‘Computer’ in Windows 7/Vista, ‘My Computer’ in XP).

MacDrive does, however, support Mac-formatted removables with the partition types of APM (Apple Partition Map) or MBR (Master Boot Record), either of which can be created with Disk Utility.

To create a removable drive that will work with MacDrive, you can use either Disk Utility or the MacDrive Disk Manager.  Please make sure to migrate any data from the device as repartitioning it will erase all data.

Disk Utility

Open Disk Utility by opening “Applications” from the Dock, and then “Utilities”.  Then, select Disk Utility.  Connect the removable device in the left panel.  Then, select “Partition”.

Select the drop-down under “Volume Scheme” to select the number of partitions you want (usually, one).  Then, select the “Options” button and select an alternate partition scheme, such as Apple Partition Map.  Then, press OK, then Apply.  You will be asked to confirm the change; press Partition to proceed.

MacDrive Disk Manager

Connect the device in question, then open “Computer” or “My Computer” to view connected devices.  Right-click on the removable device and select “Format Mac Disk”, then select “Modify Mac Volumes”.   Select the device, and press “Format Volume”, then Format.  The result will be a Mac-formatted removable device that can freely be used on Macs, or in Windows with MacDrive.

Devices with multiple partition types (i.e. dual-format)

Dual-formatted hard disks, or devices with multiple different partition types, are not supported.  For example, a device with one FAT32 partition and one HFS+ partition, or two HFS+ partitions and an NTFS partition, has multiple partition types.  Neither Windows nor MacDrive will be capable of working with a drive configured in this manner.

Devices used with MacDrive can have multiple Mac partitions (HFS+, HFS+J, HFSX, and so on).

This Knowledgebase article does not apply to Mac computers running Boot Camp. The partition configuration of the system hard disk on a Boot Camp system is fully supported.
With MacDrive installed you won’t need to use two different formats (e.g. FAT32 and HFS+) to use your drive on both computers. MacDrive enables your Windows PC to seamlessly work with HFS/HFS+ disks.

How to safely remove drives from the computer

Even though FireWire and USB devices are Plug & Play (i.e. they are ready to use upon being plugged-in), you should not just unplug them. By unplugging a drive with a “hot” connection, you can corrupt data on your hard disk or other storage device. It is important to note that even disconnecting a device improperly one time can cause file system corruption.

You can prevent such problems by clicking the “Unplug/Eject” or “Safely Remove Hardware” icon in the system tray (down by the clock). The icon looks like a gray box with with a green arrow on top.

You’ll then be given a list of removable devices that are currently connected to your computer. Highlight the device you would like to remove and click “Stop”.

Windows should then prompt you that it is safe to disconnect the device. If not, this is an indication that some part of Windows is using resources on the disk. To clear this, reboot your computer and before doing anything else, try the above instructions again.

Access denied when formatting or repairing

Typically, receiving an “access denied” error when attempting to format or repair a Mac disk is due to the disk being in use by another process.  Usually, this is because one or more Windows Explorer windows are still open showing the disk or its contents.  This includes still having “Computer” open in Windows Explorer.

Other causes include files on the disk still in use by applications or resident software (such as antivirus) using the disk.

To resolve this problem, try closing Windows Explorer windows and open applications.    If the problem persists, try disconnecting and reconnecting the drive, or restarting the computer.

Apple RAID support

MacDrive 9 Pro offers support for Apple RAID sets.  Specifically, our requirements are:

  • MacDrive 9 Pro supports RAID volumes made with GPT partitions created using Mac OS X 10.4 and above, and supports striped, mirrored and concatenated disk sets.
  • MacDrive 9 Pro requires that the complete set be connected regardless of the type of RAID (e.g. mirrored).  If not all disks are connected, MacDrive 9 Pro will wait until the complete set is connected in order to mount the set.
  • MacDrive 9 Pro does not offer support for warm-spares for mirrored sets.
  • MacDrive 9 Pro cannot mount a RAID of greater than 2TB in Windows XP 32-bit, due to the inherent limitations of this OS.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have MacDrive 9 Standard or MacDrive 8 (or prior).  Can I access Apple RAID?

Apple RAID is a feature in MacDrive 9 Pro.  If you have MacDrive 8 (or any prior version), or you have MacDrive 9 Standard, you can purchase an upgrade to MacDrive 9 Pro via the online store.

What if I have a set that was created using a version older than OS 10.4?

MacDrive supports version 2 (the current version) of Apple RAID technology, which has been included from OS 10.4 on.  RAID sets that are older than this use version 1 of Apple RAID, and are no longer supported in current versions of the Mac OS.  For that reason, we do not anticipate offering support for such drive sets.  If the RAID is re-created using a more recent version of the Mac OS, you can use it with MacDrive 9 Pro.

I have a Mac-formatted RAID that was not created with Disk Utility.  Is it supported?

MacDrive 9 Pro does not support RAIDs created with third-party Mac software.  Please read this Knowledge Base article for more information on other types of RAIDs.

I have a RAID that is over 2TB and it won’t mount in Windows XP.  Why?

We only offer support for XP 32-bit, which does not support disks larger than 2TB.  This limitation extends to sets greater than 2TB you are trying to mount with MacDrive.  You can, however, mount larger sets in newer operating systems (e.g. Windows Vista, Windows 7).

Write-behind/CRC (cyclic redundancy check)/Delayed write failed/IO error troubleshooting

The most common cause of these error messages is hardware failure, and/or failed device connectivity.

The first step in troubleshooting is to determine if the device you are using (e.g. External FireWire/USB Hard Drive) works properly when connected via an alternate connection type (if supported by the device). For example, if you are having difficulty using a hard drive via FireWire, try connecting it via USB to determine if the problem is resolved. If your hardware doesn’t have an alternate method of connection, you should contact the hardware vendor for diagnostic software to determine if your hardware is working properly.

Other steps to troubleshoot these error messages include:

  • Trying a different cable
  • Connecting the device to another port of the same type
  • Temporarily disabling any resident software that could interfere with file transfers (e.g. antivirus software)

MacDrive works with direct-attached storage (e.g. Mac-formatted hard drive connected via USB).  Sharing of Mac disks mounted with MacDrive is not supported.

Parallels & VMware Fusion compatibility

MacDrive works with Windows running virtually under Mac OS X using Parallels Desktop for Mac or VMware Fusion, with the exception in both cases that the Mac OS X system volume will be inaccessible.

In such cases, the Mac OS X system volume is inaccessible because, as with any operating system, Mac OS X requires exclusive access to any volumes it has mounted.

Please note that you will need to configure your virtualization software to have a particular virtual OS take control of a drive before Windows can use it.  This is often in a “Settings” or “Devices” menu.  For detailed help with your particular virtualization product and version, please contact the software manufacturer.

Compatibility with Boot Camp drivers and Mac OS 10.9

MacDrive 9 Standard and MacDrive 9 Pro are compatible with Boot Camp drivers from Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks as well as previous versions of Boot Camp, such as from 10.6 Snow Leopard and prior.

The Boot Camp drivers included with Mac OS Mavericks offer read-only support for Mac disks. MacDrive 9 can be installed with Boot Camp’s drivers and has been fully tested in such a scenario.

If MacDrive is installed after Boot Camp drivers are already installed, no special steps are needed. If you are installing Boot Camp drivers after installing MacDrive, either repairing or reinstalling MacDrive will be necessary; you will be prompted by MacDrive when booting Windows in this scenario.

In MacDrive 8, we recommend using 8.0.7 (the most recent release) with OS 10.7 Lion or newer.

Files appear as zero bytes (hard links)

On an HFS+ volume, some Mac software creates “hard links” instead of normal files. Hard links have no content; they are indirect references to regular files. In this way, they are somewhat similar to Windows Explorer shortcuts or Mac OS Finder aliases.

Although the Mac OS Finder shows these hard links as normal files, MacDrive does no support hard links. MacDrive will show hard links as files of size “0KB” (zero bytes).

Compatibility with disks larger than 2TB in Windows XP

Windows XP does not support disks greater than 2TB. To use the disk with Windows, you will need to use a compatible operating system that supports disks greater than 2TB (e.g. Windows Vista, Windows 7). This limitation is in Windows XP, and is not something MacDrive is capable of overcoming.

MacDrive has been tested and works properly with disks larger than 2TB under Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Apple RAID support in MacDrive 9 Pro is also limited to 2TB or less in Windows XP.

Compatibility with DMG files

MacDrive 9 offers a feature to “mount” or access the contents of unencrypted DMG files. This feature was implemented in MacDrive 7 (and newer). Prior versions of MacDrive, including MacDrive 6, cannot access DMG files.

Sparse image files are supported in MacDrive 9 Pro (not Standard).  MacDrive does not support Sparse bundles, however.

Please note that our support for DMGs and Sparse images is limited to those which are unencrypted.  MacDrive does not support encrypted disk images (or disks).

Installation

Troubleshooting installation failures

If a MacDrive installation fails, the following are some general tips for proceeding:

  • Ensure that you have downloaded the current version.  The trial download will always be the current version, but if you have a disc or are using an archived file, this is a frequent cause of issues.
  • Close all other open applications.
  • Restart Windows, then try the installation again without opening other applications.
  • Temporarily disable resident anti-malware software, such as antivirus and other security software.  You can disconnect your network connection during installation if you wish, as the installation process does not require Internet.  If installation completes, enable Internet before activating MacDrive.
  • If the installation appears to stall (the progress bar freezes), make sure there are no popups in the background asking for permissions.  Windows UAC, as well as other programs, may require you to respond before installation proceeds.

If you cannot resolve the issue, please contact our support team to continue troubleshooting. Be sure to include as much detail as possible about the installation problem: what you see occur, when the problem happens, and the exact failure behavior (such as the full exact text of any errors you see). If you are reading this, you are probably familiar with the “Disk is almost full” message on Mac. The lack of free space is, in fact, a global issue. It’s good to check your storage details before we get down to deleting things. For example, this is my disk space structure:

System: Your OS + caches, temporary files, and app localizations that waste space

How the full hard drive affects your Mac?

If your drive reaches about 80% of its capacity, your Mac will get noticeably slower. Partly, this is because of the so-called fragmenting. When there is only so much space left on disk, your Mac will split every new file into pieces or fragments and fit them into available slots elsewhere on your Mac. This slows down how your Mac processes these files. Also, some amount of your RAM (virtual memory) will be taken out to compensate for the loss of disk space.

According to MacWorld magazine, nearly full hard drives performed 17% slower in the test.

So, how do you free up space on your Mac?

There are tons of articles written about system junk, and some Mac users claim the system junk is pure evil and slows your Mac down. In my view, it’s only an excess burden to have on your machine — outdated files, browser caches, app localizations, and old-time machine backups.

Did you know there are 3 ways of deleting apps on Mac? One is dragging them straight to the Trash from Applications, the other involves Launchpad. And, finally, you can use a third-party Uninstaller tool, which also makes sense because the first two methods leave parts of old apps on your drive.

Still, I prefer deleting apps via Launchpad because it’s more fun. Open Launchpad from your Dock. Now, press the Command key and hold any app icon until they start shaking. You will see the [X] symbol above the icon — click it to delete the app.

That was easy, but here’s the deal. Every Mac has apps that don’t show up anywhere. They may have installed themselves as parts of other apps or be small supporting applications that programmers call “Launch agents” or “Daemons.” In total, they may eat up a whole lot of disk space.

In my experience, of all app cleaners, CleanMyMac X still tops the list. My personal record — 30 GB I was able to clear up on my Mac that had been taken by unused and suspicious programs. So what can you do?

  1. Download CleanMyMac X free edition here
  2. Click the Uninstaller tab.

From there, you can delete apps on a massive scale - simply select the ones you don’t need. Make sure to check the Leftovers section. These are parts and pieces of your old apps that you can’t otherwise access.


4. Delete your duplicate files

I often download an app twice by clicking on it several times or double-save a track to my iTunes library, which creates quite a mess. So if your Mac has started to run out of storage, there is a way to put an end to it. At first, you can try to find duplicates manually, but it can take you way too long with little to no result.

There is a good app called Gemini 2 - the duplicate finder. It allows you to clean out many gigabytes of duplicates in a few clicks. Plus, it allows you to check what would be deleted and deselect items you want to keep.

So, if your Mac is suffering from the invasion of the duplicates, give this software a try.


5. Remove browser cache

If you are a heavy internet user (like I am), your Mac’s drive is full of the browser cache. These are the kinds of bookmarks left on your drive by every site that you visited. What’s your primary browser? Here are the solutions for Chrome and Safari.

  1. Click the three-dot icon at the top right 
  2. Click More tools > Clear browsing data
  3. Choose a time range to clear the browsing data
  4. Also, clear “Cached images and files.”

6. Use Optimized Storage 

Apple has some storage management tools that come pre-installed on your macOS. To get to use them, click on the Apple logo > About this Mac > Click the Storage tab > Manage.

First, inspect the tabs in the sidebar on the left. Your largest files will most likely be stored in Documents.  Go inside this category to find files you can scrap. A quick tip: You can mass-select and delete screenshots on your Desktop right from here.

Optimized storage space

Here Apple offers you 4 options: the first option, “Store in iCloud,” is self-explanatory. Is iCloud paid? Yes, if your storage needs exceed 5 GB which in 2020 is laughably small. The second option, “Optimize Storage,” will remove your already watched content and the old attachments in Mail. This may help you free up a couple of gigabytes. 7. Create the map of your drive 

This method was shown to me by my programmer friend, who also happens to be a fan of CleanMyMac X. There is a tool in CleanMyMac called “Space Lens” that builds a map of your entire drive. You can see all your disk’s contents in the form of interactive bubbles that represent your big and small folders. It’s the most exciting way to clear space on your Mac. Wow!

Here you can spot the folders that hog the most space. You’ll also find your “Russian dolls” folders that are hidden inside other folders.

8. Take out the Trash 

This advice is the easiest of all. Nevertheless, people forget to do it all the time. We throw things down the Trash and think they are over with. But that’s just moving things from one pocket to another. To free up Trash, right-click the bin icon. Then, choose Empty Trash.

If you don’t like to empty the Trash every time, there is a scheduled option. Your Mac will auto-delete Trash every 30 days if you tell it so.

  • Open Finder > Preferences (in the upper menu).
  • Now choose Advanced.
  • Check this box “Remove items from Trash every 30 days.”

9. Delete extra language files

There are 180+ languages in the world, and most of your Mac’s applications can operate in these languages. However beautiful the language diversity is, people usually use just one or two. When you need to clear space on Mac, extra localization files are another target. How to see your language files? Language files end with “lproj” extension, which stands for “language project.” Unfortunately, finding them manually is problematic. Still, if you want to recover 1 GB of free space out of thin air, get hold of CleanMyMac X. It deletes extra localizations automatically. 

  1. Get CleanMyMac X here — a link to a free edition 
  2. Click System Junk and Scan.
  3. Then press Review Details.

After you click Review Details, you’ll see the tab called Language Files. As one can see, each of those files takes up about 30 MB. You can only guess how much more it will be with 180+ languages.


10. Clear your Desktop 

Desktop may not seem a big deal in terms of storage space, but only because people rarely visit it. It’s a well-known fact that a messy desktop wastes tons of space — and, most importantly — slows your Mac down.

Here’s a quick trick to organize your Desktop: click anywhere in the middle of the Desktop and then choose “Use Stacks” in the window that appears. Everything there will be neatly sorted by categories like Screenshots. Now you can mass delete all the thousands of screenshots that most of us have.

If you are using macOS High Sierra or older, you can manually clear disk space on your Mac Desktop. 

  1. Click Finder > Desktop.
  2. Under View, choose the 3-line icon. 

Now you can sort all items by size and delete the largest files.

11. Compress your files 

Archiving or compressing files is a nice alternative to permanent deletion. Not all file types compress similarly well, though. For example, documents and presentations can be substantially reduced in size by compression, while movies are harder to shrink.

Luckily, you don’t need a third-party solution to zip things up — your macOS has its built-in tool.

  1. Open Finder and go to your Documents.
  2. Command + click on a folder (or multiple folders).
  3. Choose Compress.

Be aware that macOS leaves the original file untouched, so once you have the archive, the original folder can be deleted. After you’re done, you may transfer the newly-created archive onto an external drive.

12. Slim down Time Machine snapshots 

If you have Time Machine set up properly, it creates backups of your whole system at any given time. I’m not recommending you to delete these backups completely but to trim down their size. This doesn’t affect your user-created data. I’ll show you how to do it with a free version of CleanMyMac, the tool I mentioned in the previous section.

  1. Get a free edition of CleanMyMac X
  2. Click the Maintenance tab.
  3. Choose "Time Machine Snapshot Thinning."

Here you are. After you click Run, you will successfully reduce the size of backups on your Mac.

13. Trash the old iPhone backups 

Potential space reclaimed: 10-20 GB

Outdated iPhone backups may take enormous space. If you’ve ever backed up your iPhone with your computer, your Mac probably stores all your phone’s data. It makes sense to check your drive for the outdated backups before they grow out of proportion.

Here’s how to clear space on your Mac by deleting old backups:

  1. Open Finder > Click Go in the Finder's menu > Go to Folder… 
  2. Paste in:
  3. Move the insides of the folder to the Trash, and that’s it.

  1. Connect your device to your Mac using a cable.
  2. Go to Finder > Locations > Select your device.
  3. Click Manage Backups.

Right-click, the name of the backup to see the “Show in Finder” command. Move the backup someplace else or delete it using the Delete option.

14. Get rid of your junk Mail

Everyone hates junk email. Apparently, Apple hates it too because they included automatic junk mail deletion to their Mail app. Junk mail doesn’t weigh much but still, deleting it is good for the hygiene of your Mac.

  1. Open Mail app.
  2. Click on the Mailbox tab.
  3. Choose Erase Junk Mail.
  4. Beware that this operation cannot be undone.

  • Use Safari. Starting version 10, it automatically removes duplicate downloads.
  • Back up your pictures to Photos.Google.com — it offers unlimited storage. Really.
  • Delete extensions in your browser — you can use a free version of CleanMyMac X.
  • Delete desktop apps for services that offer online analogs, like Figma.

When you turn on Files On-Demand, you’ll see all your files in Mac Finder and get new information about each file. New files created online or on another device appear as online-only files, which don’t take up space on your device. When you’re connected to the internet, you’ll be able to use online-only files like every other file on your device.

Sometimes you might want to make sure a folder doesn't show up on a device for privacy reasons. For example, you might want to hide a personal folder on a work computer. Here's how you do that.

  1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon up in your Menu bar, select the three dots to open the menu, and select Preferences.

Can I move online-only files within my OneDrive folder?

Yes, you can move online-only files within your OneDrive folder for that OneDrive account. When you move files outside that OneDrive folder, the files download to the new folder and are removed from your OneDrive. If you accidentally delete something, you can restore files or folders by going to your OneDrive recycle bin.

What happens if I delete a file or move it to the trash?

When you delete an online-only file from your device, you delete it from your OneDrive on all devices and online. You can restore deleted files and folders from your OneDrive recycle bin on the web for up to 30 days. If you delete a locally available file, it also appears in your device recycle bin.

  • Files in OneDrive will appear with new status icons

Files On-Demand is enabled by default on macOS 12 Monterey. The latest updates will allow you to see all your files in Finder under the Location section on the Sidebar and get new information about each file. Your files will have these statuses in Finder:

Disk image file format developed by Apple and commonly used by macOS

Apple[1]Disk Image is a disk image format commonly used by the macOS operating system. When opened, an Apple Disk Image is mounted as a volume within the Macintosh Finder.

An Apple Disk Image can be structured according to one of several proprietary disk image formats, including the Universal Disk Image Format (UDIF) from Mac OS X and the New Disk Image Format (NDIF) from Mac OS 9. An Apple disk image file's name usually has ".dmg" as its extension.

Apple Disk Image files are published with a MIME type of application/x-apple-diskimage.

Different file systems can be contained inside these disk images, and there is also support for creating hybrid optical media images that contain multiple file systems.[1] Some of the file systems supported include Hierarchical File System (HFS), HFS Plus, File Allocation Table (FAT), ISO9660 and Universal Disk Format (UDF).[1][2]

Apple Disk Images can be created using utilities bundled with Mac OS X, specifically Disk Copy in Mac OS X v10.2 and earlier and Disk Utility in Mac OS X v10.3 and later. These utilities can also use Apple disk image files as images for burning CDs and DVDs. Disk image files may also be managed via the command line interface using the utility.[3]

In Mac OS X v10.2.3, Apple introduced Compressed Disk Images[4] and Internet-Enabled Disk Images for use with the Apple utility Disk Copy, which was later integrated into Disk Utility in 10.3. The Disk Copy application had the ability to display a multilingual software license agreement before mounting a disk image. The image will not be mounted unless the user indicates agreement with the license.[5]

An Apple Disk Image allows secure password protection as well as file compression, and hence serves both security and file distribution functions; such a disk image is most commonly used to distribute software over the Internet.

Apple originally created its disk image formats because the resource fork used by Mac applications could not easily be transferred over mixed networks such as those that make up the Internet. Even as the use of resource forks declined with Mac OS X, disk images remained the standard software distribution format. Disk images allow the distributor to control the Finder's presentation of the window, which is commonly used to instruct the user to copy the application to the correct folder.

A previous version of the format, intended only for floppy disk images, is usually referred to as "Disk Copy 4.2" format, after the version of the Disk Copy utility that was used to handle these images.[1] A similar format that supported compression of floppy disk images is called DART.[1][6]

New Disk Image Format (NDIF) was the previous default disk image format in Mac OS 9,[1] and disk images with this format generally have a .img (not to be confused with raw .img disk image files) or .smi file extension. Files with the .smi extension are actually applications that mount an embedded disk image, thus a "Self Mounting Image", intended only for Mac OS 9 and earlier.[7][2]

Universal Disk Image Format (UDIF) is the native disk image format for Mac OS X. Disk images in this format typically have a .dmg extension.[1]

File format[edit]

Apple has not released any documentation on the format, but attempts to reverse engineer parts of the format have been successful. The encrypted layer was reverse engineered in an implementation called VileFault (a spoonerism of FileVault).[8]

Apple disk image files are essentially raw disk images (i.e. contain block data) with some added metadata, optionally with one or two layers applied that provide compression and encryption. In , these layers are called CUDIFEncoding and CEncryptedEncoding.[1]

UDIF supports ADC (an old proprietary compression format by Apple), zlib, bzip2 (as of Mac OS X v10.4), and LZFSE (as of Mac OS X v10.11)[9] compression internally.

Metadata[edit]

The UDIF metadata is found at the end of the disk image following the data. This trailer can be described using the following C structure.[10] All values are big-endian (PowerPC byte ordering)

The XML plist contains a (blocks) key, with information about how the preceding data fork is allocated. The main data is stored in a base64 block, using tables identified by the magic . This structure contains a table about blocks of data and the position and lengths of each "chunk" (usually only one chunk, but compression will create more).[10] The data and resource fork information is probably inherited from NDIF.

Encryption[edit]

The encryption layer comes in two versions. Version 1 has a trailer at the end of the file, while version 2 (default since OS X 10.5) puts it at the beginning. Whether the encryption is a layer outside of or inside of the metadata (UDIF) is unclear from reverse engineered documentation, but judging from the demonstration it's probably outside.[8]

Utilities[edit]

There are few options available to extract files or mount the proprietary Apple Disk Image format. Some cross-platform conversion utilities are:

  • dmg2img was originally written in Perl; however, the Perl version is no longer maintained, and the project was rewritten in C. It extracts the raw disk image from a DMG, without handling the file system inside. UDIF ADC-compressed images (UDCO) have been supported since version 1.5.[11]
  • DMGEXtractor is written in Java with GUI, and it supports more advanced features of dmg including AES-128 encrypted images but not UDCO images.
  • The Sleuth Kit. Only handles uncompressed DMG format, HFS+, and APFS.

Most dmg files are unencrypted. Because the dmg metadata is found in the end, a program not understanding dmg files can nevertheless read it as if it was a normal disk image, as long as there is support for the file system inside. Tools with this sort of capacity include:

  • Windows:
    • Transmac can handle both UDIF dmgs and sparsebundles, as well as HFS/HFS+ and APFS. It is unknown whether it handles encryption.[16] It can be used to create bootable macOS installers under Windows.[17]
    • A free Apple DMG Disk Image Viewer also exists, but it is unknown how much what it actually supports.[18]
  • Unix-like:
    • darling-dmg is a FUSE module enabling easy DMG file mounting on Linux. It supports UDIF and HFS/HFS+.[19]

HFS Plus or HFS+ (also known as Mac OS Extended or HFS Extended) is a journaling file system developed by Apple Inc. It replaced the Hierarchical File System (HFS) as the primary file system of Apple computers with the System Requirements For MacDrive Archives release of Mac OS 8.1. HFS+ continued as the primary Mac OS X file system until it was itself replaced with the Apple File System (APFS), released with macOS High Sierra in 2017. HFS+ is also one of the formats used by the iPod digital music player.

Compared to its predecessor HFS, also called Mac OS Standard or HFS Standard, HFS Plus supports much larger files (block addresses are 32-bit length instead of 16-bit) and using Unicode (instead of Mac OS Roman or any of several other character sets) for naming items. Like HFS, HFS Plus uses B-trees to store most volume metadata, but unlike most other file systems, HFS Plus supports hard links to directories. HFS Plus permits filenames up to 255 characters in length, and n-forked files similar to NTFS, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, though until 2005 almost no system software took advantage of forks other than the data fork and resource fork. HFS Plus also uses a full 32-bit allocation mapping table rather than HFS's 16 bits, improving the use of space on large disks.

History[edit]

Codenamed Sequoia in development,[4] HFS+ was introduced with the January 19, 1998, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, release of Mac OS 8.1.[2]

With the release of the Mac OS X 10.2.2 update on November 11, 2002, Apple added optional journaling features to HFS Plus for improved data reliability, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. These features were accessible through the GUI, using the Disk Utility application in Mac System Requirements For MacDrive Archives X Server, but only accessible through the command line in the standard desktop client.[5]

With Mac OS X v10.3, all HFS Plus volumes on all Macs were set to be journaled by default. Within the system, an HFS Plus volume with a journal is identified as HFSJ.

Mac OS X 10.3 also introduced another version of HFS Plus called HFSX. HFSX volumes are almost identical to HFS Plus volumes, except that they are never surrounded by the HFS Wrapper that is typical of HFS Plus volumes and they optionally support case sensitivity for file and folder names. HFSX volumes can be recognized by two entries in the Volume Header, a value of HX in the signature field and 5 in the version field.[2]

Mac OS X 10.3 also marked Apple's adoption of Unicode 3.2 decomposition, superseding the Unicode 2.1 decomposition used previously. This change caused problems for developers writing software for Mac OS X.[6]

Mac OS X 10.3 introduced a number of techniques that are intended to avoid fragmentating files in HFS+.[7]

With Mac OS X 10.4, Apple added support for Inline Attribute Data records, something that had been a part of the Mac OS X implementation of HFS Plus since at least 10.0, but always marked as "reserved for future use".[8] Until the release of Mac OS X Server 10.4, HFS Plus supported only the standard UNIX file system permissions; however, 10.4 introduced support for access control list–based file security, which provides a richer mechanism to define file permissions and is also designed to be fully compatible with the file permission models on other platforms such as MicrosoftWindows XP and Windows Server 2003.[9]

In Mac OS X Leopard 10.5, directory hard-linking was added as a fundamental part of Time Machine.

In Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, HFS+ compression was added using Deflate (Zlib). In open source and some other areas this is referred to as AppleFSCompression or decmpfs. Compressed data may be stored in either an extended attribute or the resource fork. When using non-Apple APIs, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, AppleFSCompression is not always completely transparent.[10] OS X 10.9 introduced two new algorithms: LZVN (libFastCompression), and LZFSE.

In Mac OS X Lion 10.7, logical volume encryption (known as FileVault 2) was added to the operating system. This addition to the operating system in no way changed the logical structure of the file system. Apple's logical volume manager is known as Core Storage and its encryption at the volume level can apply to file systems other than HFS Plus. With appropriate hardware, both encryption and decryption should be transparent.

Design[edit]

HFS Plus volumes are divided into sectors (called logical blocks in HFS), that are usually 512 bytes in size. These sectors are then grouped together into allocation blocks which can contain one or more sectors; the number of allocation blocks depends on the total size of the volume. HFS Plus uses a larger value to address allocation blocks than HFS, 32 bits rather than 16 bits; this means it can access 4,294,967,296 (= 232) allocation blocks rather than the 65,536 (= 216) allocation blocks available to HFS.[2] When disks were small, this was of little consequence, but as larger-capacity drives became available, it meant that the smallest amount of space that any file could occupy (a single allocation block) became excessively large, wasting significant amounts of space. For example, on a 1 GB disk, the allocation block size under HFS is 16 KB, so even a 1-byte file would take up 16 KB of disk space. HFS Plus's system greatly improves space utilization on larger disks as a result.

File and folder names in HFS Plus are also encoded in UTF-16[11] and normalized to a form very nearly the same as Unicode Normalization Form D (NFD)[12] (which means that precomposed characters like "å" are decomposed in the HFS+ filename and therefore count as two code units[13] and UTF-16 implies that characters from outside the Basic Multilingual Plane also count as two code units in an HFS+ filename). HFS Plus permits filenames up to 255 UTF-16 code units in length.

Formerly, HFS Plus volumes were embedded inside an HFS standard file system. This was phased out by the Tiger transition to Intel Macs, where the HFS Plus file system was not embedded inside a wrapper. The wrapper had been designed for two purposes; it allowed Macintosh computers without HFS Plus support in their ROM to boot HFS Plus volumes and it also was designed to help users transition to HFS Plus by including a minimal HFS volume with a read-only file called Where_have_all_my_files_gone?, explaining to users with versions of Mac OS 8.0 and earlier without HFS Plus, that the volume requires a system with HFS Plus support. The original HFS volume contains a signature and an offset to the embedded HFS Plus volume within its volume header. All allocation blocks in the HFS volume which contain the embedded volume are mapped out of the HFS allocation file as bad blocks.[2]

Notable among file systems used for Unix systems, HFS Plus does not support sparse System Requirements For MacDrive Archives.

There are nine structures that make up a typical HFS Plus volume:[2]

  1. Sectors 0 and 1 of the volume are HFS boot blocks. These are identical to the boot blocks in an HFS volume. They are part of the HFS wrapper.[14]
  2. Sector 2 contains the Volume Header, which is equivalent to the Master Directory Block in an HFS volume. The Volume Header stores a wide variety of data about the volume itself, for example the size of allocation blocks, a timestamp that indicates when the volume was created or the location of other volume structures such as the Catalog File or Extent Overflow File. The Volume Header is always located in the same place.
  3. The Allocation File which keeps track of which allocation blocks are free and which are in use. It is similar to the Volume Bitmap in HFS, in which each allocation block is represented by one bit. A zero means the block is free and a one means the block is in use. The main difference with the HFS Volume Bitmap, is that the Allocation File is stored as a regular file – it does not occupy a special reserved space near the beginning of the volume. The Allocation File can also change size and does not have to be stored contiguously within a volume.
  4. The Catalog File is a B-tree that contains records for all the files and directories stored in the volume. The HFS Plus Catalog File is very similar to the HFS Catalog File, the main differences being records are larger to allow more fields and to allow for those fields to be larger (for example to allow the longer 255-character unicode file names in HFS Plus). A record in the HFS Catalog File is 512 bytes in size; a record in the HFS Plus Catalog File is 4 KB in the classic Mac OS and 8 KB in macOS. Fields in HFS are of fixed size, while in HFS Plus the size can vary depending on the actual size of the data they store.
  5. The Extents Overflow File is another B-tree that records the allocation blocks that are allocated to each file as extents. Each file record System Requirements For MacDrive Archives the Catalog File is capable of recording eight extents for each fork of a file; once those are used additional extents are recorded in the Extents Overflow File. Bad blocks are also recorded as extents in the Extents Overflow File, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. The default size of an extent record in the classic Mac OS is 1 KB and 4 KB in macOS.
  6. The Attributes File is a new B-tree in HFS Plus that does not have a corresponding structure in HFS. The Attributes File can store three different types of 4 KB records: Inline Data Attribute records, Fork Data Attribute records and Extension Attribute records. Inline Data Attribute records store small attributes that can fit within the record itself. Fork Data Attribute records contain references to a maximum of eight extents that can hold larger attributes. Extension Attributes are used to extend a Fork Data Attribute record when its eight extent records are already used.
  7. The Startup File is designed for non-Mac OS systems that lack HFS or HFS Plus support. It is similar to the Boot Blocks of an HFS volume.
  8. The second-to-last sector contains the Alternate Volume Header, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives is equivalent to the Alternate Master Directory Block of HFS. Note that this is the second-to-last-sector for the disk, not the volume; if the disk is larger than the volume, the AVH will be outside the range of the filesystem.
  9. The last sector in the volume is reserved for use by Apple. It is used during the computer manufacturing process.[2]

Criticisms[edit]

HFS Plus lacks several features considered staples of modern file systems like ZFS and NTFS.[15] Data checksums are the most routinely cited missing feature.[16]

Besides checksumming, features of modern file systems that HFS+ lacks include:

  • nanosecond timestamps[16]
  • concurrent access (that is, more than one process can access the filesystem at System Requirements For MacDrive Archives same time)[16]
  • snapshotting[16]
  • Support for dates beyond February 6, 2040[17]
  • sparse file support[16]
  • a better implementation of hard links (in other filesystems, these are typically multiple directory entries pointing to the same data blocks; hard links in macOS are implemented as small files that are stored in a special hidden directory)[16]

HFS Plus was not designed for Unix-like systems, so features such as file system permissions and hard links had to be retrofitted when Apple moved to Mac OS X.[16]

Other operating systems[edit]

Linux[edit]

The Linux kernel includes the hfsplus module[18] for mounting HFS+ filesystems read-write. HFS+ fsck and mkfs have been ported to Linux and are part of the hfsprogs package.[19]

In 2009, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, these drivers were diagnosed to be corrupting HFS+ drives with a capacity greater than 2 TB.[20] Consequently, Linux distributions such as Debian and Ubuntu stopped allowing mounting of HFS+ drives or partitions greater than 2 TB.[21] As of February 2011[update], work is in progress to lift this restriction.[22][needs update]

Under Linux's current HFS+ driver, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, journaling must be disabled in order to write data safely onto an HFS+ partition. Provided the partition isn't being used by System Requirements For MacDrive Archives Time Machine software, journaling can be disabled under macOS:[23] Using Disk Utility in OS X Yosemite, the user may hold Alt/Option and click "Disable Journaling" on the File menu, having first selected a mounted partition.

An HFS+ partition with journaling enabled may be forcibly mounted with write access under Linux, but this is unsupported and unwise.[23][24]

A Google Summer of Code project to implement write support to journaled HFS+[25] was accepted by the Linux Foundation in 2011 but was not completed at that time and is still a work in progress. Progress and improvements to the HFS+ driver, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, including some updates to journaling support, are posted on the linux-fsdevel mailing list[26] from time to time.

As of July 2011[update], Paragon Software Group provided kernel drivers that allow full read-write access to HFS+ journaled volumes.[27] The product is a proprietary implementation of HFS+ based on Paragon's proprietary UFSD library. There are both free and paid editions of the driver, and they include a utility for checking and repairing HFS+ volumes. According to the online documentation (free version[28] or the paid edition[29]), both the free edition and the paid edition currently support Linux kernels from 2.6.36 up to 4.12.x. Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, OpenSUSE and CentOS are the only Linux distributions officially supported.[30]

Windows[edit]

As of May 2012, Apple has only released read-only HFS+ drivers for Windows XP, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, Windows Vista, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, and Windows 7 as part of the Boot Camp software in Mac OS X 10.6.[31] This means users on these systems can read data on the HFS+ drive, but not write to them. Microsoft has created an HFS+ driver for the Xbox 360 mainly for the purpose of reading HFS+-formatted iPods.[citation needed]

A free and opensource software – jHFSplus, based on HFSExplorer and jpfm – can be used to mount hfs/hfs+ partitions as read-only virtual folders.[32]

A freeware plugin for Total Commander exists, that can read, among others, HFS and HFS+ filesystems.[33]

DiskInternals Linux Reader can be System Requirements For MacDrive Archives to extract/save folders/files out of HFS and HFS+ Hard Drives/Partitions.[34]

A commercial product, MacDrive, is also available for System Requirements For MacDrive Archives HFS and HFS+ drives, optical discs, and other media in Windows Explorer, and allows both reading and writing to the volume, as well as repairing and formatting Mac disks.[35]

A commercial product, Paragon's HFS+ for Windows allows full read and write and disk management from all versions of Windows from Windows XP to Windows Server 2008.[36]

Cross-platform[edit]

A free (GPL) alternative is HFSExplorer written by Erik Larsson.[37] HFSExplorer is a Java application for viewing and extracting files from an HFS+ volume (Mac OS Extended) or an HFSX volume (Mac OS Extended, Case-sensitive). The volume can be located either on System Requirements For MacDrive Archives physical disk, in various Apple disk image and sparse disk image formats, or a raw file system dump. However, HFSExplorer is a read-only solution; it cannot write to HFS-formatted volumes.

Apple[1]Disk Image is a disk image format commonly used by the macOS operating system. When opened, an Apple Disk Image is mounted as a volume within the Macintosh Finder.

An Apple Disk Image can be structured according to one of several proprietary disk image formats, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, including the Universal Disk Image Format (UDIF) from Mac OS X and the New Disk Image Format (NDIF) from Mac OS 9. An Apple disk image file's name usually has ".dmg" as its extension.

Apple Disk Image files are published with a MIME type of application/x-apple-diskimage.

Different file systems System Requirements For MacDrive Archives be contained inside these disk images, and there is also support for creating hybrid optical media images that contain multiple file systems.[1] Some of the file systems supported include Hierarchical File System (HFS), HFS Plus, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, File Allocation Table (FAT), ISO9660 and Universal Disk Format (UDF).[1][2]

Apple Disk Images can be created using utilities bundled with Mac OS X, specifically Disk Copy in Mac OS X v10.2 and earlier and Disk Utility in Mac OS X v10.3 and later. These utilities can also use Apple disk image files as images for burning CDs and DVDs. Disk image files may also be managed via the command line interface using the utility.[3]

In Mac OS X v10.2.3, Apple introduced Compressed Disk Images[4] and Internet-Enabled Disk Images for use with the Apple utility Disk Copy, which was later integrated into Disk Utility in 10.3. The Disk Copy application had the System Requirements For MacDrive Archives to display a multilingual software license agreement before mounting a disk image. The image will not be mounted unless the user indicates agreement with the license.[5]

An Apple Disk Image allows secure password protection as well as file compression, and hence serves both security and file distribution functions; such a disk image is most commonly used to distribute software over the Internet.

Apple originally created its disk image formats because the resource fork used by Mac applications could not easily be transferred over mixed networks such as those that make up the Internet. Even as the use of resource forks declined with Mac OS X, disk images remained the standard software distribution format, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. Disk images allow the distributor to control the Finder's presentation of the window, which is commonly used to instruct the user to copy the application to the correct folder.

A previous version of the format, intended only for floppy disk images, is usually referred to as "Disk Copy 4.2" format, after the version of the Disk Copy utility that was used to handle these images.[1] A similar format that supported compression of floppy disk images is called DART.[1][6]

New Disk Image Format (NDIF) was the previous default disk image format in Mac OS 9,[1] and disk images with this format generally have a .img (not to be confused with raw .img disk image files) or .smi file extension. Files with the .smi extension are actually applications that mount an embedded disk image, thus a "Self Mounting Image", intended only for Mac OS 9 and earlier.[7][2]

Universal Disk Image Format (UDIF) is the native disk image format for Mac OS X. Disk images in this format typically have a .dmg extension.[1]

File format[edit]

Apple has not released any documentation on the format, but attempts to reverse engineer parts of the format have been successful. The encrypted layer was reverse engineered in an implementation called VileFault (a spoonerism of FileVault).[8]

Apple disk image files are essentially raw disk images System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. contain block data) with some added metadata, optionally with one or two layers applied that provide compression and encryption. Inthese layers are called CUDIFEncoding and CEncryptedEncoding.[1]

UDIF supports ADC (an old proprietary compression format by Apple), zlib, bzip2 (as of Mac OS X v10.4), and LZFSE (as of Mac OS X v10.11)[9] compression internally.

    STEP 1: General MacDrive checks

    If you have just installed MacDrive for the first time, please make sure that you have restarted the computer.  If you ignore the restart prompt after installing, Mac disks will not be available until the next reboot.  This is because our drivers will need to load at the next time Windows boots.

    Please make sure you are using the latest version of MacDrive before proceeding. In many cases, updating to the latest version will take care of the issue you are experiencing.

    STEP 2: Check that your drive setup is supported

    Disks with multiple partition types:  MacDrive will only work with disks containing exclusively Mac-partitions.  It will not work with disks containing multiple partition types (e.g. a FAT32 and an HFS+ partition), with the exception of disks created with Boot Camp.

    GPT and MacDrive

    What is the “activation code”?

    The activation code is a time sensitive, one use code that is generated as a part of offline activation.  If you are being asked for an activation code, follow the on-screen instructions carefully and you will be able to generate one, using either a webform on any web-capable device or by phone.  Either method requires a computer ID which is also displayed in the window.

    Why does the software say my serial number is invalid?

    – Having a different version installed than you purchased, most commonly trying to activate MacDrive Standard instead of Pro or vice versa, or trying to use a MacDrive 8 serial with MacDrive 9.

    – Having extra or missing characters in the serial number, or other typos.

    I am getting an error that there was a “licensing failure” or “an activation failure occurred”.  What do I do?

    That error generally means that, while the software can see your computer is connected to the Internet and it’s trying to use the Internet to activate, there’s something stopping the activation transaction from getting through as expected by the software. Typically, this is a firewall, proxy, or other network security that is the problem, or a temporary problem with your Internet connection.

    If you’re not sure what it could be, you can also take the computer off the Internet temporarily to use the webform- or phone-based activation methods instead, which will automatically be offered if you don’t have Internet access when you type in your serial number.

    Troubleshooting Mediafour software activation problems

    Circumstances:
    You are having a problem with the Software Activation process for a Mediafour software product.

    Cause: 
    There are four likely causes:

    3) You have already installed the software on the allowed number of computers (typically just one), or

    Drives & Devices

    Mac disk not ‘seen’ by Windows (no drive letter)

    STEP 1: General MacDrive checks

    If you have just installed MacDrive for the first time, please make sure that you have restarted the computer.  If you ignore the restart prompt after installing, Mac disks will not be available until the next reboot, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives.  This is because our drivers will need to load at the next time Windows boots.

    Please make sure you are using the latest version of MacDrive before proceeding. In many cases, updating to the latest version will take care of the issue you are experiencing.

    STEP 2: Check that your drive setup is supported

    Disks with multiple partition types:  MacDrive will only work with disks containing exclusively Mac-partitions.  It will not work with disks containing multiple partition types (e.g, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. a FAT32 and an HFS+ partition), with the exception of disks created with Boot Camp.

    Encryption and Fusion: MacDrive also does not support encrypted disks (e.g. using FileVault), or Fusion drives.  Both of these drive types require additional software to be used, and for that reason, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives the Mac OS.

    STEP 3: Check that Windows recognizes the device correctly

    A common cause is failed connectivity on your Windows system.

    GPT and MacDrive

    GPT (GUID Partition Table) is a partition type for disks.  When formatting Mac-formatted disks, such as HFS+ or HFS+J, in Disk Utility, current versions of the Mac OS typically use GPT as the default partition type.

    Fixed disks

    MacDrive fully supports GPT partitioning for fixed disks.  Fixed disks can include internal hard drives, but can also include portable devices such as external hard drives which connect via USB, FireWire, etc.

    No additional software is needed to access a Mac-formatted disk that is GPT partitioned.  You can simply connect the disk to your computer, and MacDrive will be able to access the disk and assign it a drive letter.

    Removable devices

    Removable devices, such as flash drives, cannot be GPT partitioned and work with MacDrive.  This is because Windows does not currently support GPT removable devices of any kind, including those formatted NTFS, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, the most common Windows disk formatting type.   A removable device can be identified as it will appear in the “Devices with Removable Storage” area of when viewing available drives (‘Computer’ in Windows 7/Vista, ‘My Computer’ in XP).

    MacDrive does, however, support Mac-formatted removables with the partition types of APM (Apple Partition Map) or MBR (Master Boot Record), either of which can be created with Disk Utility.

    To create a removable drive that will work with MacDrive, you can use either System Requirements For MacDrive Archives Utility or the MacDrive Disk Manager.  Please make sure to migrate any data from the device as repartitioning it will erase all data.

    Disk Utility

    Open Disk Utility by opening “Applications” from the Dock, and then “Utilities”.  Then, select Disk Utility.  Connect the removable device in the left panel.  Then, select “Partition”.

    Select the drop-down under “Volume Scheme” to select the number of partitions you want (usually, one).  Then, select the “Options” button and select an alternate partition scheme, such as Apple Partition Map.  Then, press OK, then Apply.  You will be asked to confirm the change; press Partition to proceed.

    MacDrive Disk Manager

    Connect the device in question, then open “Computer” or “My Computer” to view connected devices.  Right-click on the removable device and select “Format Mac Disk”, then select “Modify Mac Volumes”.   Select the device, and press “Format Volume”, then Format.  The result will be a Mac-formatted removable device that can freely be used on Macs, or in Windows with MacDrive.

    Devices with multiple partition types (i.e. dual-format)

    Dual-formatted hard disks, or devices with multiple different partition types, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, are not supported.  For example, a device with one FAT32 partition and one HFS+ partition, or two HFS+ partitions and an NTFS partition, has multiple partition types.  Neither Windows nor MacDrive will be capable of working with a drive configured in this manner.

    Devices used with MacDrive can have multiple Mac partitions (HFS+, HFS+J, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, HFSX, and so on).

    This Knowledgebase article does not apply to Mac computers running Boot Camp. The partition configuration of the system hard disk on a Boot Camp system is fully supported.
    With MacDrive installed you won’t need to use two different formats (e.g. FAT32 and HFS+) to use your drive on both computers. MacDrive enables your Windows PC to seamlessly work with HFS/HFS+ disks.

    How to safely remove drives from the computer

    Even though FireWire and USB devices are Plug & Play (i.e. they are ready to use upon being plugged-in), you should not just unplug them. By unplugging a drive with a “hot” connection, you can corrupt data on your hard disk or other storage device. It is important to note that even disconnecting a device improperly one time can cause file system corruption.

    You can prevent such problems by clicking the “Unplug/Eject” or “Safely Remove Hardware” icon in the system tray (down by the clock). The icon looks like a gray box with with a green arrow on top.

    You’ll then be given a list of removable devices that are currently connected to your computer. Highlight the device you would like to remove System Requirements For MacDrive Archives click “Stop”.

    Windows should then prompt you that it is safe to disconnect the device. If not, this is an indication that some part of Windows is using resources on the disk.     Access denied when formatting or repairing

    • MacDrive 9 Pro supports RAID volumes made with GPT partitions created using Mac OS X 10.4 and above, and supports striped, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, mirrored and concatenated disk sets.
    • MacDrive 9 Pro requires that the complete set be connected regardless of the type of RAID (e.g. mirrored).  If not all disks are connected, MacDrive 9 Pro will wait until the complete set is connected in order to mount the set.
    • MacDrive 9 Pro does not offer support for warm-spares for mirrored sets.
    • MacDrive 9 Pro cannot mount a RAID of greater than 2TB in Windows XP 32-bit, due to the inherent limitations of this OS.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    I have MacDrive 9 Standard or MacDrive 8 (or prior), System Requirements For MacDrive Archives.  Can I access Apple RAID?

    Apple RAID is a feature in MacDrive 9 Pro.  If you have MacDrive 8 (or any prior version), or you have MacDrive 9 Standard, you can purchase an upgrade to MacDrive 9 Pro via the online store.

    Write-behind/CRC (cyclic redundancy check)/Delayed write failed/IO error troubleshooting

    The most common cause of these error messages is hardware failure, and/or failed device connectivity.

    The first step in troubleshooting is to determine if the device you are using (e.g. External FireWire/USB Hard Drive) works properly when connected via an alternate connection type (if supported by the device). For example, if you are having difficulty using a hard drive via FireWire, try connecting it via USB to determine if the problem is resolved. If your hardware doesn’t have an alternate method of connection, you should contact the hardware vendor for diagnostic software to determine if your hardware is working properly.

    Other steps to troubleshoot these error messages include:

    • Trying a different cable
    • Connecting the device to another port of the same type
    • Temporarily disabling any resident software that could interfere with file transfers (e.g, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. antivirus software)

    Compatibility with network drives

    MacDrive is not usable in networking and/or network-attached storage scenarios (e.g. Mac-formatted hard drive connected to an Airport base station).

    MacDrive works with direct-attached storage (e.g, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. Mac-formatted hard drive connected via USB).  Sharing of Mac System Requirements For MacDrive Archives mounted with MacDrive is not supported.

    Parallels & VMware Fusion compatibility

    MacDrive works with Windows running virtually under Mac OS X using Parallels Desktop for Mac or VMware Fusion, with the exception in both cases that the Mac OS X system volume will be inaccessible.

    In such cases, the Mac OS X system volume is inaccessible because, as with any operating system, Mac OS X requires exclusive access to any volumes it has mounted.

    Please note that you will need to configure your virtualization software to have a particular virtual OS take control of a drive before Windows can use it.  This is often in a “Settings” or “Devices” menu.  For detailed help with your particular virtualization product and version, please contact the software manufacturer.

    Compatibility with Boot Camp drivers and Mac OS 10.9

    MacDrive 9 Standard and MacDrive 9 Pro are compatible with Boot Camp drivers from Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks as well as previous versions of Boot Camp, such as from 10.6 Snow Leopard and prior.

    The Boot Camp drivers included with Mac OS Mavericks offer read-only support for Mac disks. MacDrive 9 can be installed with Boot Camp’s drivers and has been fully tested in such a scenario.

    If MacDrive is installed after Boot Camp drivers are already installed, no special steps are needed. If you are installing Boot Camp drivers after installing MacDrive, either repairing or reinstalling MacDrive will be necessary; you will be prompted by MacDrive when booting Windows in this scenario.

    In MacDrive 8, we recommend using 8.0.7 (the most recent release) with OS 10.7 Lion or newer.

    Files appear as zero bytes (hard links)

    On an HFS+ volume, some Mac software creates “hard links” instead of normal files. Hard links have no content; they are indirect references to regular files. In this way, they are somewhat similar to Windows Explorer shortcuts or Mac OS Finder aliases.

    Although the Mac OS Finder shows these hard links as normal files, MacDrive does no support hard links, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. MacDrive will show hard links as files of size “0KB” (zero bytes).

    Windows XP does not support disks greater than 2TB. To use the disk with Windows, you will need to use a compatible operating system that supports disks greater than 2TB (e.g. Windows Vista, Windows 7). This limitation is in Windows XP, and is not something MacDrive is capable of overcoming.

    MacDrive has been tested and works properly with disks larger than 2TB under Windows Vista and Windows 7.

    Apple RAID support in MacDrive 9 Pro is also limited to 2TB or less in Windows XP.

    Compatibility with DMG files

    MacDrive 9 offers a feature to “mount” or access the contents of unencrypted DMG files. This feature was implemented in MacDrive 7 (and newer). System Requirements For MacDrive Archives versions of MacDrive, including MacDrive 6, cannot access DMG files.

    Sparse image files are supported in MacDrive 9 Pro (not Standard).  MacDrive does not support Sparse bundles, however.

    Please note that our support for DMGs and Sparse images is limited to those which are unencrypted.  MacDrive does not support encrypted disk images (or disks).

    Installation

    Troubleshooting installation failures

    If a MacDrive installation fails, the following are some general tips for proceeding:

    • Ensure that you have downloaded the current version.  The trial download will always be the current version, but if you have a disc or are using an archived file, this is a frequent cause of issues.
    • Close all other open applications.
    • Restart Windows, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives, then try the installation again System Requirements For MacDrive Archives opening other applications.

    Sometimes you might want to make sure a folder doesn't show up on a device for privacy reasons, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. For example, you might want to hide a personal folder on a work computer. Here's how you do that.

    1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon up in your Menu bar, select the three dots to open the menu, and select Preferences.

    Can I move online-only files within my OneDrive folder?

    Yes, you can move online-only files within your OneDrive folder for that OneDrive account. When you move files outside that OneDrive folder, the files download to the new folder and are removed from your OneDrive. If you accidentally delete something, you can restore files or folders by going to your OneDrive recycle bin.

    What happens if I delete a file or move it to the trash?

    When you delete an online-only file from your device, you delete it from your OneDrive on all devices and online. You can restore deleted files and folders from your OneDrive recycle bin on the web for up to 30 days. If you delete a locally available file, it also appears in your device recycle bin.

    Does changing a file to online-only delete the file from my OneDrive?

    No, changing a file to online-only doesn't delete it from your OneDrive. The file no longer takes up space on your device, and you will still be able to see the file from OneDrive mobile apps or on the website.

    You'll soon notice updates to Files On-Demand on macOS 12 Monterey. 

    • Files in OneDrive will appear with new status icons

    • Your OneDrive folder will be visible under Locations in the Finder sidebar

    Files On-Demand is enabled by default on macOS 12 Monterey. The latest updates will allow you to see all your files in Finder under the Location section on the Sidebar and get new information about each file. Your files will have these statuses in Finder:

    Online-only files don’t take up space on your System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. You’ll see a cloud icon for each online-only file in Finder, but the file won’t download to your device until you open it. You won’t be able to open online-only files when your device isn’t connected to the internet.

    When you open an online-only file, it downloads to your device and becomes a locally available file, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. You can open a locally available file anytime, even without internet access, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. If you need more space, you can change the file back to online only, System Requirements For MacDrive Archives. Just right-click the file and select Free up space.

    Only files that you select as Always keep on this device appear with the icon that includes a circle with a checkmark. These always available files download to your device and will require storage space, but they’re always there for you―even when you’re offline.

    Download and set up OneDrive Files On-Demand

    Download and install OneDrive Files On-Demand for Mac. 

    For new OneDrive accounts on macOS 10.14 Mojave and above, Files On-Demand is turned on by default when you set up OneDrive. Existing users will have Files On-Demand turned on when updating to macOS 12 Monterey.

    Notes: 

    • OneDrive Files On-Demand requires an Apple File System (APFS) formatted volume for syncing files. If you've been using a previous file system, it will be automatically updated when you upgrade to Mac OS Mojave.

    • Files On-Demand settings are unique to each device, so make sure you turn it on for each device where you want to use it.

    Mark a file or folder for offline use or as online-only

    You'll see the following new options when selecting files or folders in Finder.

    If you don’t see the options above, you'll need to relaunch Finder: 

    1. Press and hold the Control and Option keys.

    2. Select Finder in the Dock.

    3. Select Relaunch.

    You can also relaunch Finder from the Force Quit dialog box: 

    1. Launch Force Quit from the Apple menu (or press option + command + escape).

    2. Select Finder and press Relaunch.

      Notes: 

      • If you’d like to have all your context on your device at all times and not deal with cloud files, then select all your folders and files in your OneDrive root folder and mark them as “Always keep on this device.”

      • New files or folders created online or on another device appear as online-only to save maximum space. However, if you mark a folder as "Always keep on System Requirements For MacDrive Archives device," new files in that folder download to your device as always available files.

      • If a folder is online-only, you can still mark individual files within that folder as always available.

      • Finder can search for online-only files by name, but it cannot search the contents within online-only files because they aren't stored on the device.
