zipfile — Work with ZIP archives

Open a ZIP file, where file can be a path to a file (a string), a file-like object or a path-like object.

The mode parameter should be to read an existing file, to truncate and write a new file, to append to an existing file, or to exclusively create and write a new file. If mode is and file refers to an existing file, a will be raised. If mode is and file refers to an existing ZIP file, then additional files are added to it. If Utility tool Archives s does not refer to a ZIP file, then Utility tool Archives s new ZIP archive is appended to the file. This is meant for adding a ZIP archive to another file (such as ). If mode is and the file does not exist at all, it is created. If mode is orthe file should be seekable.

compression is the ZIP compression method to use when writing the archive, Utility tool Archives s, and should be, or ; unrecognized values will cause to be raised. If or is specified but the corresponding module (, or ) is not available, is raised. The default is .

If allowZip64 is (the default) zipfile will create ZIP files that use the ZIP64 extensions when the zipfile is larger than 4 GiB. If it is will raise an exception when the ZIP file would require ZIP64 extensions.

The compresslevel parameter controls the compression level to use when writing files to the archive. When using or it has no effect. When using integers through are accepted (see for more Utility tool Archives s. When using integers through are accepted (see for more information).

The strict_timestamps argument, when set toallows to zip files older than 1980-01-01 at the cost of setting the timestamp to 1980-01-01. Similar behavior occurs with files newer than 2107-12-31, the timestamp is also set to the limit.

If the file is created with mode or and then without adding any files to the archive, the appropriate ZIP structures for an empty archive will be written to the file.

Compression ratio results are very dependent upon the data used for the tests. Usually, 7-Zip compresses to 7z format 30-70% better than to zip format. And 7-Zip compresses to zip format Utility tool Archives s better than most of other zip compatible programs.

Description

The Unarchiver is a small and easy to use program that can unarchive many different kinds of archive files. It will open common formats such as Zip, RAR (including v5), 7-zip, Tar, Gzip and Bzip2. It will also open many older formats, such as StuffIt, DiskDoubler, LZH, ARJ and ARC. It will even open other kinds of files, like ISO and BIN disc images, some Windows .EXE installers. The list is actually much longer - see the program homepage for the full list.

The Unarchiver also tries to detect and correctly handle the filename encoding in the archives it opens, allowing you to open files from every part of the world without getting garbled filenames.

The Unarchiver aims to be the only unarchiving program you will ever need, and to stay out of your way.

Until this version 3.1.2 it was a 5 star now maybe 4

Then they had a Utility tool Archives s with 3.11.2, which they think they fixed in 3.11.3. However there are more problems with version 3.11.3. Before the last two versions, I could choose ‘Compress “some directory”’ from the finder menu, and then few minutes later I could uncompress it by using “The Unarchiver”. Now, randomly I get a notofication about the encoding the compressed file uses. So i am temporarily using command line tools to do the operations. BTW, there seems to be another bug that comes up if you select more than about 250 files from Finder and invoke “The Unarchiver”. Then somehow “The Unarchiver” memory gets corrupted, and the menus no longer work(e.g. Quit button disappears.) and the program hangs. Have to force quit it externally. I should mention Xee 3.5.3(marketed by the same company) inherited a bug in the new release, that it can no longer reliably read .cbr and .cbz(or .rar or .zip) files reliably either. Some pages show up as noise, Utility tool Archives s, where as other programs(like Comic Reader). So on Xee I rolled back to 3.5.2

Poor error handling

Been using this for years. The app works fine most of the time, but when something is wrong with the archive, the app doesn’t give anything resembling useful information about the error. It just basically tells you something’s wrong. What’s wrong? No details whatsoever other than it can’t extract. When that happens, I have to turn to the unfortunately abandoned UnRarX, which has a test function which tells me what’s wrong with the archive, such as a corrupted part.

Cannot deselect file formats in Preferences

I just installed The Unarchiver, and am attempting to set its preferences. When I try to deselect a file format which I do not want The Unarchiver to expand by default, it will not allow me to do so. It pops up a dialog saying "Set another app as the default app for selected file types if you wish, Utility tool Archives s. In smaller print, it describes the procedure to assign default applications to specific file types.

This behavior is extremely annoying. Even if I did not already know how to assign default applications, I should not be required to do so before I can deselect a file type in The Unarchiver's preferences. This behavior is enough to stop me from using the application. Please fix this obnoxious behavior. It is unreasonable.

zipfile — Work with ZIP archives

Open a ZIP file, where file can be a path to a file (a string), a file-like object or a path-like object.

The mode parameter should be to read an existing file, to truncate and write a new file, to append to an existing file, or to exclusively create and write a new file. If mode is and file refers to an existing file, a will be raised. If mode is and file refers to an existing ZIP file, then additional files are added to it. If file does not refer to a ZIP file, then a new ZIP archive is appended to the file. This is meant for adding a ZIP archive to another file (such as ). If mode is and the file does not exist at all, it is created. If mode is or , the file should be seekable.

compression is the ZIP compression method to use when writing the archive, and should be , , or ; unrecognized values will cause to be raised. If , or is specified but the corresponding module (, or ) is not available, is raised. The default is .

If allowZip64 is (the default) zipfile will create ZIP files that use the ZIP64 extensions when the zipfile is larger than 4 GiB. If it is will raise an exception when the ZIP file would require ZIP64 extensions.

The compresslevel parameter controls the compression level to use when writing files to the archive. When using or it has no effect. When using integers through are accepted (see for more information). When using integers through are accepted (see for more information).

The strict_timestamps argument, when set to , allows to zip files older than 1980-01-01 at the cost of setting the timestamp to 1980-01-01. Similar behavior occurs with files newer than 2107-12-31, the timestamp is also set to the limit.

If the file is created with mode , or and then without adding any files to the archive, the appropriate ZIP structures for an empty archive will be written to the file.

ZipFile is also a context manager and therefore supports the statement. In the example, myzip is closed after the statement’s suite is finished—even if an exception occurs:

File archiver

A file archiver is a computer program that combines a number of files together into one archive file, or a series of archive files, for easier transportation or storage. File archivers may employ lossless data compression in their archive formats to reduce the size of the archive.

Basic archivers just take a list of files and concatenate their contents sequentially into archives. The archive files need to store metadata, at least the names and lengths of the original files, if proper reconstruction is possible. More advanced archivers store additional metadata, such as the original timestamps, file attributes or access control lists.

The process of making an archive file is called archiving or packing. Reconstructing the original files from the archive is termed unarchiving, unpacking or extracting.

History[edit]

An early archiver was the Multics command archive, descended from the CTSS command of the same name, which was a basic archiver and performed no compression. Multics also had a "tape_archiver" command, abbreviated ta, which was perhaps the forerunner of unix' tar.[1]

Unix archivers[edit]

The Unix tools ar, tar, cpio act as archivers but not compressors. Users of the Unix tools use additional compression tools, such as gzip, bzip2, or xz, to compress the archive file after packing or remove compression before unpacking the archive file. The filename extensions are successively added at each step of this process. For example, archiving a collection of files with tar and then compressing the resulting archive file with gzip results a file with extension.

This approach has two goals:

  1. It follows the Unix philosophy that each program should accomplish a single task to perfection, as opposed to attempting to accomplish everything with one tool. As compression technology progresses, users may use different compression programs without having to modify or abandon their archiver.
  2. The archives use solid compression. When the files are combined, the compressor can exploit redundancy across several archived files and achieve better compression than a compressor that compresses each files individually.

This approach, however, has disadvantages too:

  1. Extracting or modifying one file is difficult. Extracting one file requires decompressing an entire archive, which can be time- and space-consuming. Modifying one means the file needs to be put back into archive and the archive recompressed again. This operation requires additional time and disk space.
  2. The archive becomes damage-prone. If the area holding shared data for several files is damaged, all those files are lost.
  3. It's impossible to take advantage of redundancy between files unless the compression window is larger than the size of an individual file. For example, gzip uses DEFLATE, which typically operates with a 32768 byte window, whereas bzip2 uses a Burrows–Wheeler transform roughly 27 times bigger. xz defaults to 8 MiB but supports significantly larger windows.

Windows archivers[edit]

The built-in archiver of Microsoft Windows as well as third-party archiving software, such as WinRAR and 7-zip, often use a graphical user interface. They also offer an optional command-line interface, while Windows itself does not. Windows archivers perform both archiving and compression. Solid compression may or may not be offered, depending on the product: Windows itself does not support it; WinRAR and 7-zip offer it as an option that can be turned on or off.

Compression ratio results are very dependent upon the data used for the tests. Usually, 7-Zip compresses to 7z format 30-70% better than to zip format. And 7-Zip compresses to zip format 2-10% better than most of other zip compatible programs.

Examples of using the jar tool to operate on jar files and jar file manifests are provided below and in the Jar trail of the Java Tutorial.

OPTIONS

Creates a new archive file named jarfile (if is specified) or to standard output (if and jarfile are omitted). Add to it the files and directories specified by inputfiles.
Updates an existing file jarfile (when is specified) by adding to it files and directories specified by inputfiles. For example: jar uf foo.jar foo.class adds the file to the existing jar file . The -u option can also update the manifest entry, as given by this example: jar umf manifest foo.jar updates the manifest with the namevalue pairs in .
Extracts files and directories from jarfile (if is specified) or standard input (if and jarfile are omitted). If inputfiles is specified, only those specified files and directories are extracted. Otherwise, all files and directories are extracted. The time and date of the extracted files are those given in the archive.
Lists the table of contents from jarfile (if is specified) or standard input (if and jarfile are omitted). If inputfiles is specified, only those specified files and directories are listed. Otherwise, all files and directories are listed.
Generate index information for the specified jarfile and its dependent jar files. For example: jar i foo.jar

generates an file in which contains location information for each package in and all the jar files specified in the attribute of . See the index example.

Specifies the file jarfile to be created (), updated (), extracted (), indexed (), or viewed (). The -f option and filename jarfile are a pair -- if present, they must both appear. Omitting and jarfile accepts a "jar file" from standard input (for x and t) or sends the "jar file" to standard output (for c and u).
Generates verbose output to standard output. Examples shown below.
(zero) Store without using ZIP compression.
Do not create a manifest file entry (for c and u), or delete a manifest file entry if one exists (for u).
Includes namevalue attribute pairs from the specified manifest file manifest in the file at . A namevalue pair is added unless one already exists with the same name, in which case its value is updated.

On the command line, the letters m and f must appear in the same order that manifest and jarfile appear. Example use:

jar cmf myManifestFile myFile.jar *.class You can add special-purpose name : value attribute pairs to the manifest that aren't contained in the default manifest. For example, you can add attributes specifying vendor information, version information, package sealing, or to make JAR-bundled applications executable. Sets entrypoint as the application entry point for stand-alone applications bundled into executable jar file. The use of this option creates or overrides the Main-Class attribute value in the manifest file. This option can be used during creation of jar file or while updating the jar file. This option specifies the application entry point without editing or creating the manifest file.

For example, this command creates where the Main-Class attribute value in the manifest is set to : jar cfe Main.jar Main Main.class

The java runtime can directly invoke this application by running the following command:

java -jar Main.jar If the entrypoint class name is in a package it may use either a dot (".") or slash ("/") character as the delimiter. For example, if is in a package called the entry point can be specified in the following ways: jar -cfe Main.jar foo/Main foo/Main.class or jar -cfe Main.jar foo.Main foo/Main.classNote:  specifying both -m and -e options together when the given manifest also contains the Main-Class attribute results in an ambigous specification, leading to an error and the jar creation or update operation is aborted.

The following command, jar uf foo.jar -C classes . -C bin xyz.class changes to the directory and adds to all files within the directory (without creating a classes directory in the jar file), then changes back to the original directory before changing to the directory to add to . Pass option to the Java runtime environment, where option is one of the options described on the reference page for the java application launcher. For example, sets the maximum memory to 48 megabytes. It is a common convention for -J to pass options to the underlying runtime environment.

COMMAND LINE ARGUMENT FILES

To shorten or simplify the jar command line, you can specify one or more files that themselves contain arguments to the command (except -Joptions). This enables you to create jar commands of any length, overcoming command line limits imposed by the operating system.

An argument file can include options and filenames. The arguments within a file can be space-separated or newline-separated. Filenames within an argument file are relative to the current directory, not relative to the location of the argument file. Wildcards (*) that might otherwise be expanded by the operating system shell are not expanded. Use of the @ character to recursively interpret files is not supported. The -J options are not supported because they are passed to the launcher, which does not support argument files.

When executing jar, pass in the path and name of each argument file with the leading character. When jar encounters an argument beginning with the character , it expands the contents of that file into the argument list.

For example, you can use a single argument file named to hold the names of the files:

C:\Java> dir /b *.class > classes.list

Then execute the jar command passing in the argfile:

An argument file can be passed in with a path, but any filenames inside the argument file that have relative paths are relative to the current working directory, not the path passed in. Here's such an example: C:\Java> jar @path1/classes.list

EXAMPLES

To add all the files in a particular directory to an archive (overwriting contents if the archive already exists). Enumerating verbosely (with the voption) will tell you more information about the files in the archive, such as their size and last modified date. To see the entry names in the jarfile, use the "t" option:

To add an index file to the jar file for speeding up class loading, use the -i option.

Let's say you split the inter-dependent classes for a stock trade application, into three jar files:  , , and . If you specify the Class-pathattribute in the manifest as: Class-Path: buy.jar sell.jarthen you can use the -ioption to speed up your application's class loading time: C:\Java> jar i main.jar An file is inserted to the directory which will enable the application class loader to download the specified jar files when it is searching for classes or resources.
