Line 6 Helix Native

Helix systems are converting many guitarists to amp modelling, and the newest of them brings Line 6’s latest algorithms to your DAW.

Line 6 have been at the forefront of guitar amp and effects modelling technology for many years. Their original Amp Farm plug-in and hardware ‘kidney bean’ Pod processor were, in many ways, the start of a revolution. In the 20 years (gulp!) since the Pod first appeared, Line 6 and their competitors have repeatedly upped their guitar rig modelling game. Line 6’s current flagship hardware product is the Helix, which comes in two different floorboard formats and as a rack unit.

As Bob Thomas said in his June 2016 review of the last of these, products such as the Helix Rack, Kemper Profiling Amplifier, Fractal Audio’s Axe FX II and Positive Grid’s BIAS Head have finally convinced a lot of guitar players that modelling is mature enough to deliver both the tone and the feel of real amps, cabinets and effects. Having owned a Helix Floor since it was first released, I agree. Whether it’s in the studio or on stage, modelling is no longer just about convenience.

In the software domain, meanwhile, products such as Guitar Rig, AmpliTube, ReValver and Line 6’s own Pod Farm all offer the same kinds of modelling algorithms, but let your computer provide the processing grunt required. For studio-based musicians, the additional convenience of a plug-in format, and the lower cost, are further attractions of this approach.

Line 6’s latest software-only product is Helix Native. As the name suggests, this is a software-based version of the Helix hardware for Mac OS and Windows, and while still not inexpensive, it is considerably cheaper than the hardware despite apparently offering exactly the same modelling technology. Indeed, Native is designed to work seamlessly with the Helix hardware and, if you happen to own both (owners of Helix hardware get a considerable discount on the price of Helix Native), any presets you create can be moved between the two platforms with a minimum of fuss. They should, in principle, sound exactly the same in both. So, if you have lusted after the modelling offered by the Helix Floor, LT or Rack, but been deterred by the price of entry, might Helix Native be a more affordable option?

Dual Helixes

There are obviously some practical differences between the hardware and software Helixes and I’ll say more about these later. However, in terms of the collection of modelled components, the gear list is identical. As such, you get over 60 amps (including a good selection of bass amps), 30 cabinets, with the option to load your own impulse responses, and over 100 effects, based upon both stompbox classics and some studio-style rack processors. The Helix concept is a complete virtual guitar rig in a single product.

In terms of the practical differences, it’s stating the obvious to say that you don’t get the robust, gig-ready hardware, with its impressive array of audio I/O (including USB for connection to your computer), 12 user-assignable footswitches and expression pedal. Helix Native is obviously intended primarily as a studio tool, and equally obviously, requires a suitable guitar-level input signal delivered from your audio interface or a recorded track. As with a real amp, if you feed a Helix amp model with a signal that’s too hot or too weak, the amp will ‘model’ a pretty realistic (poor) response.

Perhaps the other difference to note relates to the compatibility of presets between the hardware and software Helix environments. There are elements of a hardware preset, such as footswitch assignment, snapshots and audio routing to the hardware I/O, which are not directly relevant when the same preset is used in Native. This is well documented by Line 6 in Native’s PDF manual and, on the whole, passing presets between the two system seems to be handled in very elegant fashion.

One further hardware/software compatibility issue is worth noting. The Helix hardware is based around a powerful twin DSP engine that lets you build some very (very!) complex presets, but processing resources are not unlimited, and it is possible to hit the buffers. In order to maintain preset compatibility, Helix Native applies the same limitations: if Native allows you to design a rig, you can, therefore, be sure it will then run on the hardware. During the review period, I never managed to get Native to tell me I’d gone too far. This is, however, quite an interesting design decision given that Native itself could potentially access all the CPU horsepower of your host computer.

Preset editing on the Helix hardware is actually a very intuitive process, but Line 6 also have a very slick software-based editor, now called HX Edit, that allows the user to tweak presets from an attached computer over USB. Operationally, Native and HX Edit are very similar, with the obvious technical differences that Helix Native is both editor and processor, and works as a plug-in within your DAW host, while HX Edit is just an editor and functions as a stand-alone piece of software.

Installing Helix Native is straightforward, and Line 6 offer a free 15-day trial period if you do want to try before you buy. Authorisation of the full licence requires your computer to be online, although the process itself is very simple.

Diving In

Given the power and flexibility on offer, it’s perhaps not surprising that Helix Native can be a pretty deep experience, and might look a little daunting at first. However, the interface is logically organised across just three main panels, and although each might appear quite busy at first sight, it does give you easy access to all the key features.

The rightmost panel is the Librarian area, where you can access and organise both your presets and any additional cabinet impulse impulses you import. The upper centre/right panel contains the Signal Flow window where you can view and edit the arrangement of modelled components within the currently selected preset, and toggle individual components such as stompbox effects on and off. Finally, at the bottom centre/right is the Inspector panel, where you can select (to the left), and then edit (to the right) the individual modelled amps, cabs, effects and other components within your current preset. The parameters shown here reflect the contents of whichever ‘node’ is currently selected within the Signal Flow window.

Once you get into the swing of things, this three-panel arrangement has a pretty logical flow to it. Graphically, it is identical to HX Edit, and also entirely consistent with the graphical approach used within the LCD screen on the Helix Floor and Rack. The overall size of the plug-in window is adjustable, so you can scale things to suit your available screen size.

As you might expect, the Librarian window allows you to do all the usual management of presets including selection, copying, clearing, importing, exporting and reordering. Rather wonderfully, though, if you also have Helix hardware and are running HX Edit, you can simply drag and drop single or multiple presets (or IRs) between the two applications. If you have presets or IRs saved to your file system, drag and drop is also supported from your file browser. I gave all these various options a try with third-party Helix presets and custom IRs, and it worked a treat.

The Librarian and Inspector panels are pretty much self-explanatory. For the simpler presets, the Signal Flow display is also pretty logical. As you might expect, audio runs from the input on the left to the output on the right, through each modelled component in order. You can, therefore, build your presets in exactly the same sequence as you might with a ‘real’ guitar rig, placing certain effects before the amp, such as distortion, and others after, like reverb or delay.

The virtual components can, of course, be inserted, deleted or moved within the signal chain with just a click or two of the mouse; it’s certainly easier than re-patching a real rig. The Signal Flow panel also includes both input and output level metering; the former has a shaded grey zone that spans about -36 to -12 dB as a guide to a healthy input level.

A Sprawling Collection

What, then, of the components themselves? As mentioned above, the selection of modelled gear is enormous. In the main, the inspirations for those models are pretty obvious from the names given to each virtual amp, cab and effect, and Line 6 have drawn upon a veritable ‘what’s what?’ of classic and modern guitar tone technology. Therefore, alongside various generations of Fender, Marshall, Vox and MESA/Boogie amps, there are also Peavey, Bogner, Ampeg, Soldano, Orange, Park, PRS, Matchless, Hiwatt and some Line 6 own-brand options, among others. The Inspector panel offers a set of controls for each amp that reflect the originals but also offer further scope for tonal tweaking, exposing parameters such as Sag, Hum, Ripple and Bias that could only be adjusted on a real amp by poking a screwdriver inside.

A similarly broad selection of cabinet models is included to match the amps and, within the Inspector panel, you can also adjust the mic model and mic distance, along with a number of other parameters, to fine-tune your tone. The 100-plus effects options offer an equally stellar line-up, with plenty of distortion/overdrive, compression, EQ, modulation, delay and reverb types available, plus some interesting pitch-shift and synth pedal emulations and various filter and wah options. The latter, of course, are easier to exploit using the expression pedal built into the Helix hardware, but plug-in automation can be used to make them accessible from within your DAW.

The bottom line here is that Native’s virtual equipment collection is comprehensive. Yes, you might find that a particular favourite stompbox is not part of the package (yet — Line 6 have regularly added new models with each firmware update to the hardware), but it is difficult to imagine a guitar tone you couldn’t try to create using this combination of options. If you like to keep it simple with just amp, cab and reverb, that’s easily done, but if your dream rig involves twin amps and multiple types of overdrive, reverb and delay — well, that’s possible also. And, with Native, if you come up against the CPU barrier imposed by compatibility with the Helix hardware, then you can always insert a second instance of the plug-in to add more stuff!

Each of the effects groups is equally well stocked, as shown here for the delay category. Each of the effects groups is equally well stocked, as shown here for the delay category. When it comes to the practicalities of using Native within your DAW, you face the same pros and cons as with any software-based guitar rig plug-in. On the plus side, as you generally end up recording your dry guitar signal rather than the processed one, you retain complete control over the guitar tone until you print your final mix. On the down side, you have the usual latency issues to contend with while tracking and monitoring your guitar signal through Native. How sensitive you are to latency when playing in this fashion can be a very personal thing and, in the context of guitar tones, I’m sure it can influence just how it ‘feels’ to play through a Native rig compared, for example, to miking up a real amp/cab, or recording through the Helix hardware. For what it’s worth, on my test system, I thought Helix Native felt very responsive indeed with a buffer size of 128 or 192 samples; your mileage may vary.

Tone Quest Over?

We have, of course, saved the most important question until last. The virtual equipment list is impressive, the UI is pretty easy to navigate considering just how deep you can go, the compatibility between software and Helix hardware is commendable and, on the right computer host/audio interface combination, Native is very responsive while playing. But does Helix Native actually sound any good?

Guitar tone is all about personal taste, but having tried pretty much every major brand of guitar rig modelling and profiling hardware and software over the last 20 years or so, I think what Line 6 have created with Helix is right up there with the very best of what’s currently available. Indeed, that’s why I purchased a Helix Floor unit when it was first released. I’d gig with it and, in my project studio, 90 percent of the guitar and bass tones I’ve recorded over the last 18 months and more have been generated by the Helix. And, aside from the technical differences between the hardware and software described above, Helix Native sounds just as good. As part of the review process, I attempted a series of side-by-side comparisons using identical presets in Helix Floor and Helix Native, including a few ‘blind tests’, and I found it very difficult to hear any differences.

In the past, I think it was much easier to find the weak spots in the performance of modelling devices. For some it might be insipid cleans, for others it might have been fizzy distortion, while others lamented the inability to capture those ‘just breaking up’ tones so loved by blues and classic rock players. With products at the level of Helix, I no longer think that’s the case. Yes, you can argue the toss about whether, for example, the Vox AC30 model sounds exactly like a real AC30, but the model still sounds great — and, frankly, different generations of AC30 sound different from one another anyway. Equally, you can also find top-quality real amps that don’t excel at cleans, or blues or metal. Each will have its own ‘thing’ that it is designed to do well, and that’s why lots of guitar players end up owning multiple amps. A unit such as the Helix likewise provides a broad palette, in a virtual format — and given the huge improvements in that ‘virtual’ technology since the original Line 6 Pod, it now does it at a level where many players will feel they are not having to compromise on tone and feel.

Going Native

Helix Native’s cabinet modelling includes options for mic selection and placement.Helix Native’s cabinet modelling includes options for mic selection and placement. All of which boils down to the conclusion that I think Helix Native sounds fabulous. Yes, there is plenty to be said for miking a real amp, with real stompboxes, in a real room. It can sound great and there is undoubtedly an excitement factor for the player that can inspire a great performance. However, guitar rig modelling technology has now got to the point where many (although not all) guitar players are finding that the top tier of modellers can match that traditional approach. Convenience and flexibility no longer need to be the main selling points of these devices, because they can deliver in terms of tone and feel also.

The Helix hardware has, since launch, been in that top tier, and in Helix Native, Line 6 have simply delivered the same level of performance in a software-only format. Recording guitarists who have been attracted by the possibilities of the Helix hardware but deterred by the price now have a somewhat cheaper, software-only alternative that, to my ears at least, brings no sonic compromises and the added level of studio convenience that comes with a plug-in format. If you do any amount of electric guitar or bass recording in your own studio, downloading the Helix Native trial is highly recommended. Just don’t blame me if you then feel compelled to flex your credit card!

Alternatives

There are plenty of plug-in options offering guitar rig modelling in packages to suit almost any budget. The more high-profile alternatives include Peavey’s ReValver 4, Native Instruments’ Guitar Rig 5 Pro, IK Multimedia’s AmpliTube 4, Scuffham’s S-Gear 2.7 and Positive Grid’s BIAS FX and BIAS Amp. SOS have reviewed all of these products in the past so the magazine and online archives are a great place to go for any further research.

Divide & Conquer

If you don’t have experience of the Helix hardware, an aspect of Helix Native that might seem confusing at first is that components can be spread over multiple pathways across the Signal Flow panel. In the hardware devices, these multiple paths serve three main purposes. First, they allow you to route audio to the different physical audio outputs, with options including two completely separate signal chains, perhaps for a guitar and a vocal mic. Second, as part of the process of managing the CPU resources in the hardware units, each pathway is allocated a fixed proportion of the total CPU resources. You can, therefore, build more complex patches by filling one pathway and then passing the output of that onto a second pathway to add more components. Third, by splitting the signal chain you can set up multi-amp configurations and, if required, pan each amp to a different part of the stereo field.

Clearly, the first two of these functions are not so relevant when using the Native plug-in. However, in order to maintain preset compatibility between hardware and software, these multiple signal pathways are supported in Native, and many of the factory presets taken from the hardware units make use of them. Native-only users can, of course, simply confine themselves to using multiple pathways for multi-amp setups (the ‘DiscreteDuo’ preset in the Librarian’s Templates folder provides a useful example of one way to configure this) or to build more complex presets that include more components than can be placed on a single pathway.

Pros

  • Comprehensive collection of virtual guitar rig components included.
  • All the sonic options of the Helix hardware in a software-only format.
  • Good integration between Helix hardware and the plug-in.
  • Sounds great.

Cons

  • Those comprehensive options can make Native seem pretty deep on first encounter.
  • Some practical issues to navigate due to the compatibility with the Helix hardware.
  • Requires a host system capable of fairly low latency to deliver the performance ‘feel’ when tracking.

Summary

Helix Native delivers all the sonic options of the Helix hardware in a convenient, and relatively inexpensive, plug-in format. If you record electric guitar or bass, experiencing the free trial is highly recommended.

7-Zip

Open-source file archiver

7-Zip is a free and open-sourcefile archiver, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, a utility used to place groups of files within compressed containers known as "archives". It is developed by Igor Pavlov and was first released in 1999.[2] 7-Zip has its own archive format called 7z, but can read and write several others.

The program can be used from a command-line interface as the command p7zip,[12] or through a graphical user interface that also features shell integration. Most of the 7-Zip source code is under the LGPL-2.1-or-later license; the unRAR code, however, is under the LGPL-2.1-or-later license with an "unRAR restriction", which states that developers are not permitted to use the code to reverse-engineer the RAR compression algorithm.[13][14]

Since version 21.01 alpha, preliminary Linux support has been added to the upstream instead of the p7zip project.[6]

Formats[edit]

7z[edit]

Main article: 7z

By default, 7-Zip creates 7z-format archives with a file extension. Each archive can contain multiple directories and files. As a container format, security or size reduction are achieved by looking for similarities throughout the data using a stacked combination of filters. These can consist of pre-processors, compression algorithms, and encryption filters.

The core 7z compression uses a variety of algorithms, the most common of which are bzip2, PPMd, LZMA2, and LZMA. Developed by Pavlov, LZMA is a relatively new system, making its debut as part of the 7z format. LZMA uses an LZ-based sliding dictionary of up to 3840 MB in size, backed by a range coder.[15]

The native 7z file format is open and modular. File names are stored as Unicode.[16]

In 2011, TopTenReviews found that the 7z compression was at least 17% better than ZIP,[17] and 7-Zip's own site has since 2002 reported that while compression ratio results are very dependent upon the data used for the tests, "Usually, 7-Zip compresses to 7z format 30–70% better than to zip format, and 7-Zip compresses to zip format 2–10% better than most other zip-compatible programs."[18]

The 7z file format specification is distributed with the program's source code, in the "doc" sub-directory.

Other formats[edit]

7-Zip supports a number of other compression and non-compression archive formats (both for packing and unpacking), including ZIP, gzip, bzip2, xz, tar, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, and WIM, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives. The utility also supports unpacking APM, ar, ARJ, chm, cpio, deb, FLV, JAR, LHA/LZH, LZMA, MSLZ, Office Open XML, onepkg, RAR, RPM, smzip, SWF, XAR, and Z archives and cramfs, DMG, FAT, HFS, ISO, MBR, NTFS, SquashFS, UDF, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, and VHDdisk images. 7-Zip supports the ZIPX format for unpacking only. It has had this support since at least version 9.20, which was released in late 2010.

7-Zip can open some MSI files, allowing access to the meta-files within along with the main contents. Some Microsoft CAB (LZX compression) and NSIS (LZMA) installer formats can be opened. Similarly, some Microsoft executable programs (.EXEs) that are self-extracting archives or otherwise contain archived content (e.g., some setup files) may be opened as archives.

When compressing ZIP or gzip files, 7-Zip uses its own DEFLATE encoder, which may Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives higher compression, but at lower speed, than the more common zlib DEFLATE implementation. The 7-Zip deflate encoder implementation is available separately as part of the AdvanceCOMP suite of tools.

The decompression engine for RAR archives was developed using freely available source code of the unRAR program, which has a licensing restriction against creation of a RAR compressor. 7-Zip v15.06 and later support extraction of files in the RAR5 format.[19] Some backup systems use formats supported by archiving programs such as 7-Zip; e.g., some Android backups are in format, and can be extracted by archivers such as 7-Zip.[20]

7-Zip ZS, a port of 7-Zip FM with Zstandard .zst (and other formats) support, is developed by Tino Reichardt.[21]

Modern7z, a Zstandard .zst (and other formats) plugin for 7-Zip FM, is developed by Denis Anisimov (TC4shell).[22]

File manager[edit]

7-Zip comes with a file manager along with the standard archiver tools. The file manager has a toolbar with options to create an archive, extract an archive, test an archive to detect errors, copy, move, and delete files, and open a file properties menu exclusive to 7-Zip. The file manager, by default, displays hidden files because it does not follow Windows Explorer's policies. The tabs show name, modification time, original and compressed sizes, attributes, and comments (4DOS format).

When going up one directory on the root, all drives, removable or internal appear. Going up again shows a list with four options:

  • Computer: loads the drives list
  • Documents: loads user's documents, usually at
  • Network: loads a list of all network clients connected
  • \\.: Same as "Computer" except loads the drives in low-level NTFS access. This results in critical drive files and deleted files still existing on the drive to appear. (NOTE: As of November 2020, access to the active partition in low-level mode is not allowed for currently unknown reasons.)

Features[edit]

7-Zip supports:

  • Encryption via the 256-bit AES cipher, which can be enabled for both files and the 7z hierarchy. When the hierarchy is encrypted, users are required to supply a password to see the filenames contained within the archive. WinZip-developed Zip file AES encryption standard is also available in 7-Zip to encrypt ZIP archives with AES 256-bit, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives it does not offer filename encryption as in 7z archives.[23]
  • Volumes of dynamically variable sizes, allowing use for backups on removable media such as writable CDs and DVDs
  • Usability as a basic orthodox file manager when used in dual panel mode
  • Multiple-core CPU threading[24]
  • Opening EXE files as archives, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, allowing the decompression of data from inside many "Setup" or "Installer" or "Extract" type programs without having to launch them
  • Unpacking archives with corrupted filenames, renaming the files as required
  • Create self-extracting single-volume archives
  • Command-line interface[25]
  • Graphical user interface. The Windows version comes with its own GUI; however, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, p7zip uses the GUI of the Unix/Linux Archive Manager.[26]
  • Calculating checksums in the formats CRC-32, CRC-64, SHA-1, or SHA-256 for files on disk, available either via command line or Explorer's context menu[2]

Variants[edit]

Two command-line versions are provided: 7z.exe, using external libraries; and a standalone executable 7za.exe, containing built-in modules, but with compression/decompression support limited to 7z, ZIP, gzip, bzip2, Z and tar formats. A 64-bit version is available, with support for large memory maps, leading to faster compression. All versions support multi-threading.

The 7za.exe version of 7-Zip is available for Unix-like operating systems (including Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS), FreeDOS, OpenVMS, AmigaOS 4, and MorphOS under the p7zip project.[12]

Software development kit[edit]

7-Zip has a LZMASDK which was originally dual-licensed under both the GNU LGPL and Common Public License,[27] with an additional special exception for linked binaries. On 2 December 2008, the SDK was placed by Igor Pavlov in the public domain.[11]

Security[edit]

On older versions, self-extracting archives were vulnerable to arbitrary code execution through DLL hijacking: they load and run a DLL named UXTheme.dll, if it is in the same folder as the executable file.[28][29][30] 7-Zip 16.03 Release notes say that the installer and SFX modules have added protection against DLL preloading attack.[2]

Versions of 7-Zip prior to 18.05 contain an arbitrary code execution vulnerability in the module for extracting files from RAR archives (CVE-2018-10115), a vulnerability that was fixed on 30 April 2018.[31]

Reception and usage[edit]

Snapfiles.com in 2012 rated 7-Zip 4.5 stars out of 5, noting, "[its] interface and additional features are fairly crack deezer premium android Archives, but the compression ratio is outstanding".[32]

On TechRepublic in 2009, Justin James found the detailed settings for Windows File Manager integration were "appreciated" and called the compression-decompression benchmark utility "neat". And though the archive dialog has settings that "will confound most users", he concluded: "7-Zip fits a nice niche in between the built-in Windows capabilities and the features of the paid products, and it is able to handle a large variety of file formats in the process."[33]

Between 2002 and 2016, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, 7-Zip was downloaded 410 million times from SourceForge alone.[34]

The software has received awards, In 2007, SourceForge granted it community choice awards for "Technical Design" and for "Best Project".[35] In 2013, Tom's Hardware conducted a compression speed test comparing 7-ZIP, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, MagicRAR, WinRAR, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, WinZip; they concluded that 7-ZIP beat out all the others with regards to compression speed, ratio, and size and awarded the software the 2013 Tom's Hardware Elite award.[36]

  • Distortion > Horizon Drive (Mono, Stereo), based on* the Horizon Devices Precision Drive. Includes an extra Gate Range parameter that, when set to "Extended," drops the gate's threshold down to -90dB
  • Distortion > Swedish Chainsaw(Mono, Stereo), based on* the BOSS® HM-2 Heavy Metal Distortion (Made in Japan black label)
  • Distortion > Pocket Fuzz (Mono, Stereo), inspired by* the Jordan Boss Tone fuzz
  • Distortion > Bighorn Fuzz (Mono, Stereo), based on* the 1973 Electro-Harmonix® Ram's Head Big Muff Pi
  • Distortion > Ballistic Fuzz (Mono, Stereo), based on* the Euthymia ICBM fuzz
  • Dynamics > Horizon Gate (Mono, Stereo), based on* the Horizon Devices Precision Drive's gate circuit. Includes an extra Gate Range parameter that, when set to "Extended," drops the gate's threshold down to -90dB. Works best before an amp
  • EQ > Acoustic Sim (Mono, Stereo), based on* the BOSS® AC-2 Acoustic Simulator. Can be used alone or in conjunction with an acoustic IR
  • Modulation > Poly Detune (Mono), Line 6 Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives > Poly Sustain (Mono), Line 6 Original
    1. Assign Poly Sustain to a stomp footswitch. By default, Poly Sustain appears bypassed.
    2. First play the note or chord you wish to sustain, and then press the footswitch (on) to sustain it indefinitely. Keep playing while the note or chord loops. TIP:Some players may find it easier to change the footswitch mode to Momentary; that way, the note or chord sustains only while you hold the switch on, much like the sustain pedal on a piano.
    3. Press the switch again (off) and the sustained note or chord fades out.
    • Interval—Sets the pitch of the sustained note or chord. TIP: This parameter is especially cool for creating massive drones to play over
    • Attack—Sets the speed at which the sustained note or chord fades in
    • Decay—Sets the speed at which the sustained note or chord fades out after bypassing the effect
    • Mod Freq—Sets the speed of the built in modulation
    • Mod Depth—Sets the depth of the built in modulation
    • FX Level—Sets the level of the sustained signal
    • RandDpth—Higher values increase the randomization of the section of audio being sustained, resulting in a more natural, but less predictable drone
    • RandSpeed—Controls how fast the randomization wanders. Setting both RndDpth and RndSpd to high values will result in a glitch fest (not that there's anything wrong with that)
    • Level—Controls the overall output level of the block
  • Delay > Glitch Delay (Mono, Stereo), Line 6 Original performance delay that lets you freely manipulate the repeats' behavior in real time
    • Time—Sets the delay time; press the knob to toggle between ms/sec and note values
    • Delay Div—Divides the delay time into smaller increments
    • Mix—Controls the wet/dry mix of the delay. When set to 0%, no delay is heard; when set to 100%, no dry signal is heard
    • Feedback—Controls the overall number of repeats heard for the entire sequence
    • SliceFdbk—Controls the number of repeats heard for individual slices. At higher values, you could call this "Super Chaotic Feedback"
    • Shuffle—Determines the likelihood of repeats shuffling/reordering
    • Octaves—Determines the likelihood of repeats playing back an octave higher or lower
    • Reverse—Determines the likelihood of repeats playing backwards
    • Seq Drift—Determines the likelihood of the entire sequence changing every time it loops around. When set to 0%, the same sequence loops forever. TIP: Assign this parameter to a footswitch set to toggle between a higher number and 0%. If you hear a random sequence you want to maintain, press the switch to set Seq Drift to 0%, and it'll repeat that way indefinitely
    • Smoothing—Higher values apply smoothing between slices and can give a synth-pad type quality, lower values maintain transients. Or set it just high enough to avoid pops and clicks
    • Trails—When on, delay repeats continue to ring out after the block is bypassed
  • Pitch/Synth > Poly Pitch(Mono), Line 6 Original
    • NOTE: Polyphonic pitch engines Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives designed for shifting complex chords with minimal artifacts, at the expense of latency (and our algorithms have lower latency than leading standalone poly pitch pedals). If you're looking to pitch individual notes (such as in a solo), monophonic pitchshifting is often preferred. See the Tracking parameter below for more information
    • IMPORTANT! 3.0's new poly models are extremely DSP-intensive. Some effects can eat up roughly a quarter of all available DSP on a Helix Floor, Rack, or LT or half (!!!) of all available DSP on HX Stomp or HX Effects. You also can't run more than one on the same path/DSP. Don't say we didn't warn you.
    • Interval—Sets the pitch of the effect in semitones
    • Cents—Sets the pitch of the effect in cents
    • ShiftTime—Determines how long it takes for the signal to ramp up or down to the set pitch when the Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives is enabled. Press the knob to toggle between ms/Sec and note/beat values. TIP: Want to hit the switch and have Poly Pitch dive bomb and land on the selected interval exactly one bar later? Press the knob to select note values and set ShiftTime to "1/1"
    • ShiftCurve—Determines the trajectory curve of the pitch shift over time. StartSlow values are concave (slower changes to start, speeding up toward the end); StartFast values are convex (the opposite). The default is "Linear"
    • ReturnTime—Determines how long it takes for the signal to return to normal pitch when the block is bypassed. Press the knob to toggle between ms/Sec and note/beat values
    • ReturnCurv—Determines the trajectory curve when returning to the original pitch. StartSlow values are concave (slower changes to start, speeding up toward the end); StartFast values are convex (the opposite)
    • Tracking—Determines how the poly pitch engine behaves. "X Fast" results in lower latency, ideal for faster lead lines. "X Stable" (the default) results in fewer artifacts when pitch shifting complex, sustained chords. "Fast" and "Stable" are somewhere in between. TIP: If you find yourself changing playing styles—say from fast lead lines to clean, open chords—you can assign this parameter to a footswitch (or snapshots) to optimize the balance between transparency and low latency
    • Auto EQ—Determines how much compensation EQ is applied to the shifted signal. If the effected signal sounds too harsh when pitched up (or dull when pitched down), adjust this setting to taste. When set to 0.0, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, no compensation is applied
    • Mix—Controls the wet/dry mix of the pitchshift
    • Level—Controls the overall output level of the block
  • Pitch/Synth > Poly Wham(Mono), Line 6 Original. Works equally well on guitar and bass, although you might want to tweak the Auto EQ parameter for your particular instrument. See Poly Pitch notes above for additional information
  • Pitch/Synth > Poly Capo (Mono), Line 6 Original. Simpler version of Poly Pitch when you just want to change keys. Works equally well on guitar and bass, although you might want to tweak the Auto EQ parameter for your particular instrument. See Poly Pitch notes above for additional information
  • Pitch/Synth > 12 String(Mono), Line 6 Original 12-string guitar emulation
  • Volume/Pan > Stereo Imager (Stereo), Line 6 Original
  • Looper > Shuffling Looper (Mono, Stereo), Line 6 Original. Part looper, part sampler, part inspiration generator, part performance instrument, the Shuffling Looper intelligently chops Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives your playing and gives you realtime control over reordering, octave shifting, reversing, and repeating. It's all immense fun (even on vocals, drums, and percussion), but you'll want to familiarize yourself with its controls. IMPORTANT: The Shuffling Looper does not currently respond to Command Center > HX Commands or per-function MIDI commands
  1. Add Looper > Shuffling Looper to a preset and assign it to a footswitch.
  2. Turn Knob 1 (Slices) to set the number of slices your loop will be chopped into. 8 slices is the default.
  3. Press the switch to begin recording. The LED lights Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, indicating the loop is recording.
  4. At the end of your loop, press the switch. The LED lights green and the sliced loop sequence immediately plays.
  5. During playback, adjust the following knobs (or assign them to controllers, like expression pedals or snapshots):
    • Slices—Changes the number of slices your loop will be chopped into
    • SeqLength—Determines the number of slices in the sequence. This can be changed even after recording a loop
    • Shuffle—Determines the likelihood of slices shuffling/reordering. At 0%, the slices never shuffle; at 100%, they're constantly reshuffling
    • Octave—Determines the likelihood of slices playing back an octave higher or lower
    • Reverse—Determines the likelihood of slices playing backwards
    • Repeat—Determines the likelihood of slices repeating
    • Smoothing—Higher values apply smoothing between slices and can give a synth-pad type quality, lower values maintain transients. Or set it just high enough to avoid pops and clicks
    • Seq Drift—Determines the likelihood of the entire slice sequence changing every time it loops around. When set to 0.0, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, the same sequence repeats forever; when set to 10.0, the sequence changes completely every time it loops TIP: Assign this parameter to a footswitch set to toggle between a higher number and 0%. If you hear a random sequence you want to maintain, press the switch to set Seq Drift to 0%, and it'll repeat that way indefinitely
    • Playback—Sets the looper's playback level
    • Low Cut—Applies a low cut (or high pass) filter to the loop, letting you remove looper signal below a certain frequency
    • High Cut—Applies a high cut (or low pass) filter to the loop, letting you remove looper signal above a certain frequency
  6. Want to change it up? While the loop is Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, press the switch to randomize its slice sequence.
  7. Quickly double-press the switch. Playback/recording stops and the LED lights white, indicating a loop is in memory. Press again to restart.
  8. While the loop is playing or stopped, press and hold the switch. The recording is deleted and the LED lights dim white.

New Features

True Preset Spillover

Helix Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, Helix Rack/Control, Helix LT

Despite what some might have you believe, the only digital multieffects units with true preset spillover Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives the DigiTech GSP1101, 2112, and 2120, and they accomplished this by dedicating one of their two DSPs to spillover and only spillover. (Basically, to hear two dynamically allocated presets with absolutely zero gap—not a global reverb smeared to cover the gap—you need enough DSP to run both of them simultaneously.) So. if you're willing to sacrifice half your DSP—that is, COMPLETELY DISABLE PATH 2—you too can have true preset spillover. IMPORTANT! Unfortunately, Looper recording or playback will not currently spill over from one preset to another. Also, note that there may be a slight hiccup when switching between two presets with different impedance values for the Guitar Input.

  1. In the Global Settings > Preferences menu, set Preset Spillover to "On." (SHORTCUT: Hold ACTION and press PhotoInstrument 7.6 Crack Archives A dialog appears, reading "Remove Path 2 to enable preset spillover?"
  2. Press Knob 6 (OK).
  3. Press HOME. Path 2 has disappeared! You may now switch presets to your heart's delight with true spillover but note that if Preset A is still spilling over into Preset B (say one of its delay blocks' feedback is making it self-oscillate), switching to Preset C will abruptly cut off Preset A.
  4. To return to normal operation with two paths, turn Preset Spillover back to "Off". (SHORTCUT: Hold ACTION and press HOME again.) A dialog appears, reading "The preset must be reloaded. All unsaved changes will be lost!" So if you've made changes to the preset, be sure to save it before turning Spillover off.
  5. Press Knob 6 (OK).

But but but. I don't wanna lose Path 2 just for spillover!

Then keep using snapshots.

Favorites

Helix Floor, Helix Rack/Control, Helix LT, Helix Native, HX Effects, HX Stomp

If you've dialed in an amp or effects block exactly the way you like it, you can now save its settings as a favorite so it can be added very quickly, complete with bypass state and footswitch assignment. Favorites appear in a new "Favorites" category and can be renamed, reordered, and cleared. TIP: If you don't want a favorite to be recalled with its footswitch assignment, add the block before you assign a switch.

  1. Choose one of your favorite amps or effects and tweak it exactly how you like it, with or without footswitch assignment.
  2. Press ACTION and then press Add to Favorites. The Favorites list appears.
  3. If you wish to replace an existing favorite (you get 128 total), select it and press Replace Favorite. If you wish to add a new favorite, select the location where you want to place it and press Add New Favorite.
  4. OPTIONAL: While the Favorites list is open, press ACTION.
    • To reorder the selected favorite up or down the list, turn Reorder Favorite (on HX Effects, press Reorder Up or Reorder Down)
    • To rename the selected favorite, press Rename Favorite
    • To clear the selected favorite, press Clear Favorite
    • To clear all favorites, press Clear All Favorites. A dialog appears. Press OK to confirm.

All right, so what?

Here's what:

  1. At any time, select an empty block and turn the joystick (Big Knob on HX Effects or Lower Knob on HX Stomp). All your perfectly-tweaked favorite amps and effects instantly appear, without having to open the model list at all. If you typically keep model categories on the same stomp footswitches, you could conceivably create a brand new preset with all of your favorite stuff—including all footswitch assignments—in less than 10 seconds. Creating tones has never been faster or easier. TIP: If you keep one or more external pedals connected to Helix's FX Loops, add the FX Loop blocks as favorites and then rename them after the real thing.

User Model Defaults

Helix Floor, Helix Rack/Control, Helix LT, Helix Native, HX Effects, HX Stomp

3.0 lets you save any amp, cab, or effect block's settings as default so every time you call that model up, it sounds exactly the way you want it. Or, if you want to revert it to factory default, you can do that too. NOTE: Unlike Favorites, user model defaults do not store any footswitch assignments.

  1. Choose any model and tweak it exactly how you like it.
  2. Press ACTION and then User Default. From Helix Native or HX Edit, right-click (Mac: control-click) the block icon and select "User Default"

Global Settings > Preferences > Auto Impedance

Helix Floor, Helix Rack/Control, Helix LT, HX Stomp

A new Global Settings > Preference parameter determines how the Guitar In's impedance circuit behaves when Input > In-Z is set to "Auto." When set to "First Block" (the default), the impedance circuit reflects the impedance of the first block on Path 1A, regardless of whether it's enabled or bypassed. When set to "First Enabled", Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives impedance circuit reflects the impedance of the first enabled block on Path 1A. Called "Auto Impedance" because "Sorry-this-took-so-long-we-love-you-Tito83" wouldn't fit.

Min/Max Value Indicators

Helix Floor, Helix Rack/Control, Helix LT, HX Stomp [Feature already in HX Effects]

Parameters assigned to controllers or snapshots now display small Min Value (below) and Max Value (above) indicators. You can now see the range of continuous controllers from the Home screen.

8 Blocks in HX Stomp

HX Stomp

HX Stomp's simultaneous block count has been increased from six to eight.

IMPORTANT!Although HX Stomp now has two additional block locations, this doesn't mean it magically has more DSP horsepower to accommodate those blocks. Don't be surprised if you're not able to fill all eight blocks with exactly what you want, especially considering the new polyphonic pitch models take up a lot more DSP. We've taken note of those who've bemoaned HX Stomp's 6 block limit, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives if the same person now complains about running out of DSP with 8 blocks, we're sending hooligans to their home to administer an atomic wedgie.

NOTE: It shouldn't come as any surprise, but any presets you make in 3.0 will not be compatible with 2.92 or earlier firmware.

Command Center in HX Stomp

HX Stomp [Feature already in Helix Floor, Helix Rack/Control, Helix LT, and HX Effects]

Why would people expect a stompbox with only three footswitches to also act as a master MIDI controller? Yeah, we don't know either, but enough of you asked for it and it wasn't exceedingly difficult to add.

  1. Press together to open the Menu and then press Knob 3 (Command Center).
  2. Turn the Upper Knob to select the command source (Instant 1-6, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives 1-5, or EXP 1-2).
  3. Turn Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives 1 (Command) to select the type of command you wish to transmit. For information on the types of commands HX Stomp transmits, see the HX Stomp 3.0 Owner's Manual.

Wait, does this mean I can use HX Stomp as both an audio interface AND a remote control for YouTube lesson videos by sending QWERTY hotkeys?

Yes.

Tuner in Helix Native

Helix Native [Feature already in Helix and HX hardware]

Helix Native now has the same needle and strobe tuner from Helix.

  1. Click the tuner icon.
  2. Choose the tuner type by selecting Coarse, Fine, or Strobe.

Gain Reduction Meters in Helix Native

Helix Native [Feature already in Helix hardware]

The following block types display a gain reduction meter in the inspector when selected:

  • Dynamics > Compressor
  • Dynamics > Gate

Artist Presets

IMPORTANT! Because we never want to overwrite your own presets, upgrading to 3.0 does NOT automatically make these presets visible; you will need to manually restore them. Restoring Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives setlists and presets will completely overwrite your own, so make sure they're backed up first!

TIP: With Helix Floor/Rack/LT/Native, if you want to keep both your presets and the latest factory presets, back up your custom presets as setlists and after the procedure below, Line 6 Helix Native Activation Key Archives, drag your setlists onto unused setlist locations.

  1. Make sure you've backed up your presets and turn off Helix/HX.
  2. Perform the following procedure:
    • Helix Floor/LT: While holding footswitches 7 and 8 (two leftmost switches on the bottom row), turn on Helix Floor/LT. Wait for "Will restore." to appear and let go
    • Helix Rack/Control: While holding knobs 3 and 4 (two middle knobs below the screen), turn on Helix Rack. Wait for "Will restore." to appear and let go
    • Helix Native: Click the gear icon in the lower left corner, click the Presets/IRs tab, and click "Restore Factory Setlists"

Helix 3.0 includes factory presets created by the following artists:

3.0 Owner's Manuals

Helix Floor, Helix Rack/Control, Helix LT, Helix Native, HX Effects, HX Stomp, HX Edit

Bug Fixes

  • When synced to external MIDI clock or retriggering via TAP, certain models with tremolo circuits' LFO set to square wave would invert the waveform–FIXED
  • If Helix had been left powered on for 24 hours with the same preset active (What? Why?), its reverb blocks could become disabled until selecting another preset—FIXED
  • Many other minor fixes and improvements

Known Issues

  • Distortion > Vermin Dist's resonant filter was mapped incorrectly, and is especially apparent at higher gain settings. This will be fixed in 3.10
  • In the Poly Pitch models, very fast playing may exhibit some minor onset smearing. Additional improvements to the poly pitch engine are forthcoming
  • The Shuffling Looper does not currently respond to Command Center > HX Commands or per-function MIDI commands
  • Variax Model min and max sliders do not automatically update when a Variax is connected
  • When Tuner View is active while Spillover is engaged, changing presets can sometimes cause audio output to stop
  • After importing a .WAV file into the current 'Empty' slot of an Impulse Response block, all audio output can stop
  • After exiting a menu, HX Stomp’s TAP LED can occasionally appear to blink erratically
  • Clearing a Split block on Path 2 does not automatically remove its bypass assignment

Line 6 Helix Native Guitar Amp and Effects Plug-in

Line 6 updates Helix Native amp & effects modeling plugin to v1.01

Line 6 Helix Native offers the power and tonal authenticity of award-winning HXTM modeling technology in one add-on. Like hardware members of the Helix family of guitar processors (Helix Floor, Helix Rack, and Helix LT), the Helix Native plug-in offers accurate recreations of vintage and modern amps, speakers, microphones, and effects, as well as a wide signal. – Routing functions and an intuitive user interface. And preset compatibility across the Helix family allows users of Helix hardware to bring studio-created sounds to the stage, simply by transferring their plug-in presets to their Helix Floor, Helix Rack or Helix LT processors.

Line 6 has been at the forefront of guitar amp and effects modeling technology for many years. The original Amp Farm plug-in and the ‘bean’ hardware Pod processor were, in many ways, the beginning of a revolution. In the 20 years (sip!) Since the Pod first appeared, Line 6 and its competitors have repeatedly upped their game of guitar modeling. Line 6’s current main hardware product is Helix, which comes in two different floor formats and as a rack unit.

As Bob Thomas said in his June 2016 review of the latter, products like the Helix Rack, Kemper Profiling Amplifier, Fractal Audio’s Ax FX II, and Positive Grid’s BIAS Head have finally convinced many guitarists that modeling is mature enough to deliver the tone and feel of real amps, cabinets and effects. Having a Helix Floor since it was released, I agree. Whether in the studio or on stage, modeling is no longer just a matter of convenience.
