How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Chat Messages - pity, that
Over the past few years, WhatsApp has established itself as the go-to social media platform, helping people connect with friends and family. One of the features that have endeared users to the platform is the ability to send or receive an unlimited number of messages that don’t autodelete, as happens with some other social media platforms.
However, WhatsApp allows you to delete the messages you don’t want to keep. This means there’s a possibility of deleting something accidentally. You might also lose your messages inadvertently, for example, when switching to a new device or even while resetting your device.
But does that mean you lose those messages forever? The answer is no. If you have accidentally deleted messages from your WhatsApp account, there is still a chance to recover them.
How To Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages
If you’re an avid WhatsApp user, there’s a good chance you’ve had the unfortunate experience of losing some of your messages. It could be a funny text from a friend, contact information shared with you by a colleague, or even an exchange you could present as evidence in court.
Although WhatsApp doesn’t provide a direct built-in tool to help you retrieve deleted messages, you can still recover them in several ways. However, recovery methods generally depend on the type of device you’re using. For example, what works for Android devices may not work for iPhones.
First, let’s dive in and see how to recover your old WhatsApp messages on an Android device.
Recover Deleted Messages WhatsApp Android
Android devices are often praised for their affordability, large display, open-source programs (which makes them highly customizable), and an incredible app selection in the Google Play Store. It’s no wonder that most Android devices today are fully compatible with WhatsApp.
But as with other devices, you can lose your WhatsApp data in a matter of seconds. This can happen if you hit the “delete” button accidentally, or if you switch to a new device.
Luckily, WhatsApp comes equipped with a cloud-based backup solution that can save the day if you lose your messages and want to retrieve them. But how exactly does it work?
Once you’ve enabled backup in the settings section of your WhatsApp account, the app starts to store copies of all your messages in WhatsApp’s servers at regular intervals. At the beginning of each cycle, the app checks to see if it has a duplicate of each message on its server. If it doesn’t, a duplicate is created immediately. The app also saves any new photos or videos automatically.
Therefore, your backup should be the first place you look when you delete a message accidentally.
Here’s how to recover deleted WhatsApp messages on an Android device when you’ve backed up your data:
- Delete WhatsApp from your device.
- Download a new copy of WhatsApp from Google Play and install it on your device.
- After installation, open the app and enter your details, including your name and number.
- During installation, a prompt will appear on your screen asking whether you’d like to
“Restore” your chats from your Google Drive. Tap on “Restore” to initiate the recovery process.
- After your data has been recovered successfully, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
After taking these steps, all your old messages and media should now be available in your chats.
Recover Deleted Messages WhatsApp on an iPhone
Like Android, the WhatsApp application for iPhones supports backup to the cloud at regular intervals. So long as your backup is enabled, WhatsApp will store copies of all your messages in the iCloud Drive. You can even see when the last backup was performed by opening the settings section of your account.
Recovering deleted messages from iCloud is straightforward:
- Uninstall WhatsApp from your device.
- Visit the App Store and download a new copy of WhatsApp.
- After downloading the app successfully, install it on your device.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to recover all the deleted messages.
And with that, all your deleted messages will be displayed in your chat.
However, it’s important to ensure that you have enough space in your local storage before the recovery process starts. As a rule of thumb, the available local storage should be twice as much as the size of your backup. For example, if your backup is 1GB, there should be at least 2GB of free storage space on your device.
How To Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages Without a Backup
Although data recovery from your WhatsApp backup is fast and convenient, you may have forgotten to enable it when setting up your account.
The good news is that you can still recover lost messages and media thanks to your device’s local backup or third-party software.
Let’s see how this is done when you’re running WhatsApp on Android.
Apart from cloud-based backup, all Android devices come with Android Local Backup, an automatic backup system that stores up to 25MBs of data per app.
Android Local Backup is the default data backup service for many Android devices. It’s typically included in nearly every new handset that comes with Google Mobile Services (a collection of Google apps that help support functionality across devices).
Even if you haven’t enabled cloud backup on your WhatsApp account, you can still recover the data stored in your device’s local backup. Here’s how to go about it:
- Open your device’s File Manager and tap on “WhatsApp.”
- Tap on the “Database” folder.
- Look for a file named “arenaqq.us” and change its name to “msgstore_arenaqq.us12”.
- After that, look for the file named “arenaqq.us12” and rename it to “arenaqq.us12”.
- At this point, delete WhatsApp from your device and then download a new copy from the Google Play store and install it on your device.
- Since you don’t have any files backed up in the cloud, you’ll be prompted to restore your chats from the local phone backup. Tap on “Restore” to initiate the recovery process.
And that’s it. You should now be able to view most deleted messages in your chats.
The downside to this method is that you can only recover the most recent messages. That’s because the amount of backup space available for each app is severely limited.
If you run WhatsApp on iOS and cloud backup isn’t enabled, you can only recover deleted messages via a third-party tool.
Although there are several options to choose from, MiniTool Mobile Recovery for iOS stands out because it doesn’t require you to uninstall WhatsApp.
Here’s how to use it:
- Download and install the software on a PC.
- Connect your phone to your PC via a suitable USB cable.
- Open the software just installed on your PC.
- Click on “Scan.” This will initiate a thorough search through all the social media and communication apps installed on your iPhone.
- At this point, select “WhatsApp” from the menu displayed on the left side of your screen. This should show you all messages, including the ones that had been deleted.
- Select the messages you’d like to recover and then hit the “Recover” button in the lower right corner.

Restore Chats deleted from WhatsApp via Cloud Backup
If you have deleted the conversations accidentally, there is a possibility that the chat was present in the cloud backup. Here’s how to restore them:
- Uninstall WhatsApp from the iPhone Android smartphone.
- Reinstall WhatsApp and configure it with your phone number.
- Once the application is configured, you will receive a message asking you to restore the messages from a cloud backup. This backup would be from Google Drive on Android and iCloud on iOS. Click Restore.
- This will return the messages you accidentally deleted. Please note that if you received a message after the most recent cloud backup and you deleted it, there's no way to recover it.
Restoring Chats Deleted from WhatsApp via Android Local Backup
Another way to attempt to restore conversations deleted from WhatsApp is to retrieve them from local phone backups. This method does not work on iOS but does work on Android. Please follow these steps:
- Go to your phone's File Manager, then to the WhatsApp -> Database folder. The Database folder contains all the WhatsApp backup files that are stored locally on the phone.
- Select the file arenaqq.us12 and rename it to msgstore_arenaqq.us This is the most recent backup file and you should rename it to prevent it from being overwritten. In case things go wrong, you can always rename this file to its original name and restore it.
- Now you will see a lot of files in this folder with the format arenaqq.us These are older WhatsApp backups; you can choose the most recent one and rename it to arenaqq.us
- Now for the hard part: you need to open Google Drive on your phone, touch the three vertical lines icon -> Backups. Now delete the backup from WhatsApp. This will force the phone to restore from the local backup.
- Now, uninstall WhatsApp and reinstall it. Configure it and once you have done this, you will receive a message to restore your chats from a local backup, considering that you do not have a cloud backup.
- Hit Restore and you're done. You'll get all your deleted chats back.
Have you ever accidentally deleted a WhatsApp chat and regretted it immediately? Wondering if there is a way to get it back? Worry not, we're here to help. We'll share a way to restore deleted WhatsApp chats and one method to bring back WhatsApp chats overwritten by an iCloud or Google Drive backup. Before trying out the steps, do keep in mind that you can only restore chats if the backup option had been turned on in the first place on WhatsApp. This means that if you had never done a backup of your chats, then you won't be able to recover any messages or chats that you accidentally delete.
Another thing we should point out is that we have tested these methods to restore deleted WhatsApp chats and they have worked for us but these methods involve uninstalling WhatsApp and restoring from the most recent backup. This could mean that you lose some messages that have arrived between the time of your last backup and when you accidentally deleted a chat. Whatever the case, proceed with extreme caution and follow these steps only if recovering the deleted WhatsApp messages is important enough to risk potentially losing some data. Gadgets is not responsible for any loss of data so proceed at your own risk.
To turn on chat backup, open WhatsApp, go to Settings > go to Chats > tap on Chat backup. Over here, you can set up the frequency of your chat backup between never, daily, weekly or monthly, or you can even do a manual backup as well. Additionally, you'll have to select the Google account where you'd want the backup to be stored if you use an Android smartphone.
And if you're an iPhone user, go to Settings within WhatsApp > Chats > Chat Backup, where you can select the Auto Backup frequency or use Back Up Now to manually initiate a backup to iCloud.
Let's get started.
How to restore deleted WhatsApp chats
Here's how to restore deleted WhatsApp chats using various methods.
Restore deleted WhatsApp chats via cloud backup
If you have deleted chats accidentally, there's a chance that the chat was present on your cloud backup. Let's say your Google Drive or iCloud backup took place at midnight and in the morning you accidentally deleted a chat. The cloud backup still has the chat and you can restore it. Here's how:
- Uninstall WhatsApp from your Android smartphone or iPhone.
- Reinstall WhatsApp and set it up with your phone number.
- Once the app is set up, you will get a prompt asking you to restore messages from a cloud backup. This backup would be from Google Drive on Android, and iCloud on iOS. Tap Restore.
- This will bring back the messages that you had accidentally deleted. Note that if you got a message after your most recent cloud backup and deleted it, there's no way to recover it.
Restoring deleted WhatsApp chats via Android's local backup
Another way to try restoring deleted WhatsApp chats is to recover them from local backups on your Android phone. This method does not work on iOS. If your Google Drive backup has overwritten the deleted messages, then follow these steps.
- Go to your phone's File Manager (download Google's Files app if you can't find this app). Now go to the WhatsApp folder > Database. The Database folder contains all the WhatsApp backup files that are stored locally on your phone.
- Select the file arenaqq.us12 and rename it to msgstore_arenaqq.us12. This is your most recent backup file and you need to rename it so as to prevent it from being overwritten. In case things go wrong, you can always rename this file to its original name and restore.
- Now you will see a bunch of files in this folder in the format arenaqq.us12. These are your older WhatsApp backups, you can pick the most recent one and rename it to arenaqq.us12.
- Here's the tricky part: you need to open Google Drive on your smartphone, tap the hamburger icon (the three vertical lines) > Backups. Now delete the WhatsApp backup there. This will force your phone to restore from the local backup instead.
- Now, uninstall WhatsApp and then reinstall it. Set it up and once done, you will get a prompt to restore chats from a local backup, considering you don't have a chat backup on the cloud.
- Tap on Restore and that's it. You'll get your deleted chats back.
So, these are the two methods which you can use in a situation where you have accidentally deleted your WhatsApp chats or in a situation where you have freshly installed WhatsApp and want your old chats back. Either way, as we mentioned above, you need to have the chat backup option turned on in order to restore any messages.

WhatsApp is the most popular chat platform in the world, boasting two billion regular users - nearly a quarter of the global population. Some of them may find that, every now and again, they would prefer to delete a conversation rather than archive it, and sometimes they may do so accidentally. Archived chats can be recovered very easily within the Facebook-owned app, but doing the same with deleted messages could prove a challenge. Here, arenaqq.us shows how to recover deleted WhatsApp messages on your iPhone or Android.
Understanding WhatsApp chat backups:
In order to retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages, you need to enable Chat Backup in Settings.
WhatsApp offers several backup frequencies in Under Auto Backup: Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Off.
Remember, WhatsApp will only retain the most recent backup file in iOS and the two latest backup files in Android.
These daily auto backups make it easy to recover messages soon after deletion.
Weekly auto backups allow you to go further back in time to recover deleted WhatsApp messages from less than seven days ago at the expense of losing recent chat messages.
Simply select the WhatsApp auto backup frequency that best suits your needs.

How to restore archived WhatsApp messages:
If your WhatsApp chats were archived, iOS users can reverse the archival by giving your iPhone a shake and choose Undo to recover the archived chat.
Even if the chat was archived a while ago, you can still recover them.
In iOS: Scroll up in the chat list until Archived Chats appears.
Tap on it, then swipe left on the chat to restore. Tap Unarchive.
In Android: Tap on Archived chats at the bottom of the chat list.
Tap and hold on the chat you would like to recover, than select the Unarchive icon.
How to retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages:
Simply uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp. When you reinstall the app, you will be prompted to restore your message history from the backup file.
Select Restore and everything from the latest backup will be restored.
This method of recovering deleted WhatsApp messages works on both Android and iOS but it has to be within your selected auto backup frequency.
Therefore if your auto backup frequency is set to daily, then you can easily recover any deleted chats before the next backup occurs.
How to recover older deleted WhatsApp chats in Android:
Getting deleted messages back after a backup has run is slightly more difficult.
It will depend on your selected auto backup frequency and will only work on Android devices.
Open File Explorer on your device and navigate to WhatsApp and Databases.
