Cryptocurrency miner gets nasty by disabling antivirus, security updates

If you download and install pirated PC games, your antivirus software could be turned off, Windows security updates could cease and your beloved GPU could be hijacked to mine cryptocurrency.

So warns a new report from antivirus firm Avast, which says that a new piece of coin-mining malware called "Crackonosh" has infected more than 200,000 Windows PCs since 2018, netting the crooks behind it about $2 million in Monero cryptocurrency.

"Crackonosh is distributed along with illegal, cracked copies of popular software and searches for and disables many popular antivirus programs as part of its anti-detection and anti-forensics tactics," wrote Avast researcher Daniel Benes.

Infected downloads containing Crackonosh include "cracked" installers of Fallout 4 Game of the Year edition, Far Cry 5, Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K19, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 and, um, The Sims 4 and The Sims 4 Seasons.

If anecdotal reports cited by Avast were any indication, the cracked games played just fine, only with an extra bit of unseen menace.

Once a cracked game is installed, the malware makes some Windows Registry changes and installs a few executables that have names that sound like regular Windows services: winrmsrv.exe, winscomrssrv.dll and winlogui.exe. (The latter is the coin-mining part.) It lies in wait for a time, and then on the seventh or 10th restart after installation, boots the PC into Safe Mode.

Many cryptocurrency miners, aka "crypto-jackers," don't really do much damage to the machines they infect. They just want to "borrow" CPU and GPU cycles to generate coins. But Crackonosh is different.

Because antivirus software doesn't operate in Safe Mode — even Windows' own Microsoft Defender Antivirus, aka Windows Defender — booting the PC into Safe Mode gives Crackonosh an opportunity to strike.

It disables Microsoft/Defender, and deletes Avast, Bitdefender, F-Secure, Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton or Panda antivirus software if it's present. It then tweaks the Registry further to disable Windows security updates.

After all that, the malware will be ready to deploy the XMRig miner to hijack your cycles and generate Monero — and your computer will be  exposed to the full force of internet malware like a naked child in a cold winter.

If your machine suddenly has a lot of malware, your antivirus software is nowhere to be found and you haven't received a Windows update in months, you might be harboring Crackonosh. Getting rid of it isn't easy — Avast has a full set of how-to instructions in its report, but they're pretty technical and best left to someone who knows the intricacies of the Windows Registry.

It's best just to avoid infection altogether by not installing cracked software. If you feel you absolutely must, then scan each software installer with antivirus software before you run it. You can often just right-click the installer in your Downloads folder and then select "Scan with" the antivirus software of your choice from the pop-out menu.

"As long as people continue to download cracked software, attacks like these will continue to be profitable for attackers," wrote Avast's Benes. "The key take-away from this is that you really can't get something for nothing and when you try to steal software — odds are someone is trying to steal from you."

How pirates hook gamers

Brandon wanted to play a computer game without paying. No fool, he knows where to download games free (without SMS or registration). The Internet is teeming with sites with headings such as “Download pirated games free without viruses.”

Of course, game developers aren’t fools either, and they’ve come up with plenty of methods to fight piracy. But for every cunning developer, there’s sure to be a kindly hacker who can somehow get around the tricks of the trade, upload a crack, and share it online so that others can play free.

In this case, Brandon even knew the name of the crack needed for the game he wanted to play, so he went straight to googling the names of the game and the crack. Google didn’t disappoint. Among the numerous search results, however, Brandon didn’t see a single familiar site offering pirated games and cracks. No matter — he just wanted to get playing.

All sorts of websites with discussion forums — Google Groups, Zendesk, Yahoo! Answers, and others — come in handy in cases like this one, and Google tends to show them above the search results because they are likely to answer user queries. Sure enough, someone was interested in getting this crack before Brandon was, and an obliging user had given a link to a pirate site that had the game and the crack.

Brandon mentally thanked the user and went to the site. Sure enough, he found a link to download the game and a crack for it. He downloaded everything, installed the game from the downloaded image, and ran the crack as directed in the instructions.

The crack seemed to work, but for some reason the game continued to demand activation. Cursing under (and over) his breath, Brandon started to look for a new crack for the game. Meanwhile, the ransomware that had downloaded itself under the guise of being the crack stealthily encrypted the files on his hard drive and prepared itself to deliver a ransom demand.Man gets really mad with his computer because of ransomware

Virus-ridden cracks. Why now more than ever?

There is nothing new about running into malware when using pirated products. Those who avoided paying for software back when protection was weaker remember how their resident antivirus would choke on a Trojan when they were trying to run a crack.

Game-cracking hackers need to eat too, so they make a little extra by turning users’ computers into bots or homes for banking Trojans. The chances of downloading a free game without a virus have always been low. But recently, the likelihood of downloading a malicious program not just with a crack, but instead of it, has shot up.

According to a Torrentfreak article, scammers recently launched a major campaign to promote sites with malware.

It goes like this. Scammers actively distribute links to their malicious sites through public and well-known sites such as Google Groups, Facebook Events Calendar, Zendesk, and many others. They include links to download what are advertised as cracks or actual pirated games, and they write how-to guides for them.

The links point to a file storage site, only a malware installer is downloaded instead of the promised game crack. And users, being accustomed to their antivirus identifying a Trojan when installing a game, ignore or even disable it so as to download and install the file in peace.

“Bad” pirates outgoogle “good” pirates

Even more interesting, scammers, pretending to be well-known publishers like Valve or Ubisoft, have begun to bombard Google with complaints under the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) against respectable (relatively speaking) sites hosting pirated games — that is, ones that do not distribute malware.

What’s more, these are not ordinary complaints about copyright violation; they’re complaining about the sites’ bypassing of DRM protection. The DMCA devotes a separate paragraph to such complaints, and unlike with ordinary ones, the accused sites cannot challenge the decision.

Following the rules, Google removes the “good” pirate sites from its search results, meaning that the “bad” pirates who distribute malware under the guise of cracked games get listed higher. That means freebie-seekers are more likely to visit them and download more viruses as a result.

How to avoid infection

One piece of advice stands head and shoulders above all others:

  • Do not use pirated software. Buy games and software, and only in official stores at that. If you really want to save, wait for the next sale — discounts can reach 90%.

But something tells me that the Brandons of the world won’t follow this advice, so here are a couple of tips for those who can’t give up pirated software:

  • Avoid obscure pirate sites. On a major torrent tracker with many moderators, the probability of picking up an infection is at least lower than on a quirky resource that only appeared six months ago.
  • Install a reliable antivirus and never (ever ever) disable it. They don’t cry “malware” for no reason — no pirate resource, even a “good” one, can offer a 100% guarantee that a free game will come without a virus.

You don’t need to break the bank to get good antivirus protection — we offer a great one for no charge at all: Kaspersky Free. And whatever you do, don’t be one of those geniuses who download pirated antivirus software and get a Trojan instead — the irony is thick enough to spread on toast.

Pirated Software is All Fun and Games Until Your Data’s Stolen

Crack

It may be tempting to try to download the latest games or applications for free, but doing so will ultimately land you in a hotbed of trouble as your computer becomes infected with adware, ransomware, and password-stealing Trojans.

Tools that allow you to crack, or bypass license restrictions, in copyrighted software have been around forever and users have always known that they face the risk of being infected with unwanted software by using them.

In the past, though, most of the unwanted programs that were installed were adware or browser extensions, and though definitely a nuisance, for the most part, they were not stealing your files or installing ransomware on your computer.

This has changed as software installer monetization companies have started to increasingly team up with ransomware and password-stealing Trojan developers to distribute their malware.

Passwords stolen through software cracks

BleepingComputer has been tracking adware bundles for a long time and in the past, they would install unwanted programs, but had no long-term ramifications to your data, privacy, or financial information.

Security researcher Benkøw has recently noticed that monetized installers pretending to be software cracks and key generators are now commonly installing password-stealing Trojans or remote access Trojans (RATs) when they are executed.

In his tests over the past week by downloading various programs promoted as game cheats, software key generators, and licensed software, when installing them he was infected with password-stealing Trojans and backdoors such as Dreambot, Glupteba, and Racoon Stealer.

In BleepingComputer's tests, we were infected with ShadowTechRAT, which would allow an attacker to gain full access to an infected computer.

It is not only RATs and password-stealing Trojans that users could be infected with.

One of the most prolific ransomware infections called STOP is known to be installed through these same adware bundles.

Distributed via torrent sites, YouTube, and fake crack sites

To distribute these adware bundles, attackers will upload them to torrent sites, create fake YouTube videos with links to alleged license key generators, or create sites designed to just promote adware bundles disguised as software cracks.

On torrent sites, you will commonly find that the same user has uploaded many different games, applications, and key generators that all have the same size.  For example, in the image below you can see a user named 'toneg374' had uploaded many torrents around the same time that all have the size of 25.33 MB.

Torrent site pushing copyrighted games

YouTube also has its fair share of scammers who create videos promoting a game cheat and then include a link to a file download. Like the torrent sites, these downloads are adware bundles that install malware.

YouTube pushing key generator

When users download these files they think they are getting the latest game, application, or cheat for free, but when they install it they will be greeted with an installation screen that quickly disappears.

InstallCapital Adware Bundle screen

In the background, though, malware had been installed and either executed to steal the victim's passwords or data or to sit running while performing malicious activity.

 ShadowTechRAT installed in BleepingComputer's test

It's not worth it

While it may be tempting to download pirated software so that you do not have to pay for it, the risks far outweigh the reward.

Even if we put aside the fact that downloading copyrighted software is illegal, it is just not worth the potential risk of losing your data, online banking credentials being stolen, or data being stolen.

BleepingComputer gets emails, Twitter DMs, and Facebook messages every day from people who were infected by the STOP ransomware after pirating software.

These people have lost baby pictures, their thesis, or company data simply because they wanted to save $50. They now have to pay $1,000 or more to get their files back.

It is just not worth it.
